Hi Guys,

I have a water hose thats has sprung a leak. The job would take 30sec to fix if it wasnt in a *bleep* of a place to get to.

The hose thats gone is right behind the turbo, just below the manifold. Its spraying water on the turbo and dripping on to the exhaust. The only way I can see on fixing this is to remove the down pipe, oil filter and alternator air cooler and thats going to give me some access.

Do any of you know of a simpler way to fix this problem? Can it be got at from underneath without removing anything?

Sorry, Forgot to mention its an ST185

They dont call it the hose from hell for nothing ! I have read of people replacing these without removing the turbo, but how big their hands were is something else ? I would look at removing the rad and alternator and try from either underneath looking up behind turbo or from the left side ? Access from the right would be almost impossible due to oil feed/return pipe, long narrow pliers maybe would be useful..

I did once do mine without removing downpipe, using some very long nosed pliers, long screwdrivers etc. Never again, the swear box nearly bankrupted me. It's quicker to remove the downpipe and gain easy access to do the job properly.

Ideally, but the correct new pipe from TCB or Toyota as it comes with the heatshieldd, if not make sure you put some good heatshielding on it.

I was thinking removing the alternator and oil filter and coming in from the side.

I have the repair manual and the pipe is like 3inches long. What a ST205 for something so small.

It may be possible to undo the nut in the centre of the oil cooler donut once the filter's off to gain a bit more room, not tried that option on a 185 so not sure what sort of seal it has underneath. I would guess it's a large O ring.

you also have to be careful when pulling the hfh off the stainless water pipe that it doesn't come off at an awkward angle otherwise you bend the hard pipe..

I always remove the downpipe on all models of gt4, on the 185 if you remove the downpipe and oil filter then follow the steel pipe from the hose from hell to the heat exchanger undo the 12mm bolt that locks it in position as well as the 2 10mm nuts and then undo the securing screw for the heat exchanger this makes it a lot easier but please replace the steel gasket as well as the hfh

taking the oil filter and it cooler is the easy way to do the hose from hell.

the oil seal below is the same size as the oil seal coming with new oil filter, even has same lip to hold it open.

do the other hose going to the bottom of the water pump at the same time if doing that one.

its an easy 20 minute job, once coolant is drained, the oil filter and the cooler will weep some oil on removal, but no need to drain the engine oil.

I have the part coming from toyota on thursday. Are these oil seals special or just 'O' rings? Can they be re-used? So, no need to remove the down pipe?

You make it sound so easy. Bet it aint lol
