I dont know about you, but I have always been a little disappointed when using rust removers, the best one I had used up until this week was hammerite immersion rust remover, it was pretty good but took about a week to do its thing.

As usual I was trawling through the US forums on vehicle restoration and noticed alot of people recommended this Bilt Hamber Deox range, it isnt easy to come across in the UK, but Opie Oils sell it

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/pv-97012-bilt ... tAod6WQALg

So I ordered some and gave it a try.

So, how do you prepare it? Well the Deox C comes in a container and it looks like washing powder, It suggests using warm water to mix it with so i did, the results were pretty good, the only problem was I couldnt mix it to the concentration I wanted, the crystals just wouldnt all dissolve. I tried a couple of bolts and a rusty sub frame bush, over night they came up quite well, all the rust had vanished, the water had taken on a slight hue of brown, that was about it. I kept the mix and will keep using it on nuts and bolts until it stops working, see how many treatments each solution will do.

Next up I needed to make up some more as I had some bigger pieces I needed to treat. So using an old dustbin I decided to try boiling water, this meant boiling the kettle a few times but it worked, I managed to get the concentration I wanted, roughly 25%.

I then prepared the item to be treated, in this case the disc stone guard backing plate things, now we all know how rusty these things can get, well mine were no different, so into the hot bath they went

This is the guard after just 20 mins in Hot Deox C

I will post up another picture after it has been in all night but I must say I am impressed

Have to say that these days I've learned my lesson

Stuff like that gets shipped to the local powder coat shop for blasting but I doff my cap to you for effort
Mind my experience with rust converters has been poor. If the Bilt really works I might change my opinion again

These are the over night results, no rubbing down at all yet, this is straight out of the Deox C

Image

even more impressive, these are two bolts from the rear hub that were very rusty, to the point where i thought they would be unrecoverable. Soaking for 48hrs

Image

as you can see they came up very well.

I am now in the process or wire brushing the backing plates and using POR prep and ready on them before I paint them

Looks really good - I've had a fair bit of success using an electrolysis technique - have you looked into that?

I think I'll definitely pick up some of this stuff next time I put in an Opie order.

No not really, I am usually a wire brush and elbow grease man, but this stuff seams good at getting the worst off :)

This is after a good squirt with POR metal prep and ready, a bit of a rub down with 400grip emery cloth. ready for paint

Great write-up Nial :) like the guys say, looks like its definitely worth using. We must keep this a secret because any chemical that's an effective cleaner usually gets instantly banned by the authorities

On a separate note I'm amazed that your backing plates were recoverable. Mine just dissolved after twelve years of salty roads :(

We will see how the hubs do. They havent been in the bath for 24 hours yet, I think they will need to be in for 48 hours minimum. I dont think the results will be as spectacular, although you never know. I want to try the gel next, see how that compares :)

Looks good so far.

Looking forward to seeing the hubs when finished, did you manage to get any "before" pics?
