I would remove the throttle body to clean it - then you can be sure no crud will enter the engine.

I'd also remove those green fins you have attached to the intercooler, they probably are not helping airflow through the core.

ok will do.

whenever i have been driving to check and stopped to touch the intercooler it has been cold to the touch with my magic/lame fins. i did feel these were helping but i shall remove them it isnt the first time its been suggested.

Maybe get a cheap temperature probe and readout to see if they are making a difference.

I'd would have thought they would be move restrictive, I may well be wrong though. See what its like running with out them, if its worse you can always put them back :)

Also - pretty sure that square hole should be there and the hold looks like where one of the turbo mounting studs would be so that will be fine as well.

Not sure on the white stuff.

The 'square hole' is part of the manifold and should be there. I presume it's actually an expansion gap in the mounting flange part of the manifold to reduce warpage with heat.

I wouldn't undo those screws - just leave them as it is.

and my engine bay as i left it

tomorrows plans are to drain the engine coolant.

i am dilemma-ing regarding removing the head, maybe i should just replace the bits i have and see if that fixes the running issues then save for martin to do it.
or.....
should i have a go whilst i have the limited time and space then its all done once and for good.

both videos i took of yesterday and this morning showed no blue smoke or unusual white smoke for that matter.

any thoughts or suggestions please ?
thanks....

Don't forget to calibrate that TPS when you have the car running again. I think the procedure is in the toyota BGB.

Did you do the coolant leakdown test for exhaust gas? That mayo in the oil filler cap dosen't look that bad to me.

As sirius says the green fins will deffo be restricting flow through the core, the scoop bonnet should have rubber seals around the outer edge were it sits over the core to force the air through so with them fins there they can only get in the way ;-)

The white discolouration is likely to be a hairline crack in the manifold and the gasket cracking on the 2nd picture, I know it should be black but ive seen this before and thats usually the cause

How come ur taking the head off still have you confirmed that the head gasket has failed ?

Martin

Good morning guys.

I wanted to give an update and didn't see Martin and Sirius had posted.

New plugs, new dizzy cap and arm, new Tps sensor, cleaned throttle , new calipers and discs,

I have no blue smoke, white smoke at all :-)
The beast sounds like it is running nice. I didn't calibrate the TPS, I tried to make sure it went on exactly the same but I haven't calibrated it. I will check this weekend.

Timing is spot on.

I now know how to change brake pads, discs and calipers. I know how to do a compression check. The engine bay reduces in perceptual size once more. Woohoo.

I am going to try changing my fuel filter this weekend.

I didn't continue with the head removal, it's payday this week so I'm gonna do more purchasing and work. It needs an MOT so I'm going to book for Friday and ask them if they could do the HG test for me.

Alex Morton has an aladins garage of stuff so will be going to get some stuff from him this weekend. I think I might book my mot with his garage and ask him to check HG.

Lastly for now. I'm going to remove the fins.

Thanks.
