Hi Folks,

Would someone with an ST205 be able to measure a couple of things on the altenator for me, its some of the wiring - I need to know the largest size at the points marked on the drawing below:

Thanks to Kris for the picture - hope you don't mind me pinching it.

I would check myself but car is 250 miles away :(

Rather a vague question, is it the diameter you need?

Yes sorry - its late :)

Yep the maximum diameter at each of the points A, B and C.

I am buying some heatproof sleeving so need to know what size to get over the widest points.

I'll get this done this morning if no-one else beats me to it. Your after the maximum diameter of the cabling specifically at those points?

You'll need the diameter that fits over the eyelet then ( assuming the rubber boot pulls off )

Bear in mind the wire produces heat when the alternator is running so good heat insulation may be counter productive. I would use a very loose sleve more like a conduit. Or better still make up a heat shield between the alternator and exhaust as It's normally the bolt connection that suffers most.

Also grease the bolt connection to prevent corrosion.

I'm not sure if you are thinking of using the aluminised radiant heat reflector or the orange fire sleeve? I have fitted the aluminised type of protection as shown below. The heat is marginal for the tie wraps as you will see they have discoloured slightly. You can use stainless steel tie wraps to avoid this. The heat sleeve I have fitted doesn't increase the diameter much. I've measured it at 17mm at points A and B. Point B is the grey rubber cover which is quite squidgy (good technical term!) so would fit into a 17mm hose OK. I'm not sure if you are planning on trying to cover the whole of the grey plastic connector at Point C but the female socket measures 22mm. The male plug is of course slightly smaller

Thanks for the info folks.

Interesting point Chris about the wire producing heat. I have found that the OEM wrapping on that section of cable goes really brittle if not protected from the external heat. I guess to fit over the ends it will have to be fairly loose.

All the failures I have encountered, the excessive heat has clearly come from the connection as the insulation has melted at that end only, and the connection is corroded.

To give you an idea of self heating, the 17th edition has tables of rated currect for various cable sizes and various means of mounting. The rating is based on cables getting to 70C in ambient temperature of 30C

e.g. 25mm sq. cable (6mm dia copper)

Free air (horizontal) - 146A
Free air (vertical) - 130A (heat rises and further heats the cable above)
In conduit in thermally insulating wall - 80A (description below)

Quote:
The wall consists of an outer weatherproof skin, thermal insulation and an inner skin of wood having a thermal conductance of at least 10W/m2.K The conduit is is fixed so that it is close to the inner skin. Heat from the cables is assumed to escape through the inner skin only.

It would be interesting to put a temperature sensor near the wire and measure the surrounding air - it may be cooler than the wire would be in a nice cosy jacket with all the lights and fans on.

I still think a better solution would be a heat shield and maybe duct some cold air over it - a use for the cam belt snorkel ?

Nice info - with my new data logger I have scope to measure many many things. I am planning on getting a 'spare' temperature sensor that I can move around to various locations for exactly this sort of thing.
