Post subject:  St185 orginal turbo needs replacing or fixing?

Hi gang,

ST185 All track -91 got the judgment from the shop: turbo's turbine is too loose, need to fix or repair.

Any hints which way to go. Should the old one be refurbished if not seriously bad, or go to new one directly. Or to buy a fixed old one.

One option is also to buy one from this forum if solid one available. I'm looking for the standard CT26 or better one with clear instructions on what other adaptations need to be done to the car. ECU etc are original.

Head gasket was bad as well, so mending ongoing. Loads of other stuff going on at the same time (e.g. newer top-mount intercooler, old was leaking). Any hints what to fix/change at the same time since motor is open. I'm not looking for much more power as such, just to remove some limiting factors if evident/easy to make. At the moment aiming for standard setup, but open for suggestions.

My wish is to have the car in a shape that it runs smoothly and is reliable enough to drive 500 km on a one run. Hope the goal is not too high :o

TCB Breakers might be your best bet

As far as headgasket buy a std st205 metal one and fit that instead of the paper 185 one they are cheap and a worthwhile upgrade.

A metal headgasket requires block and head face to be cleaner & flatter than a paper one. Make sure all traces of the old gasket are gone. Head may require a small skim. Worth the upgrade though.

turbo wise, stick with standard or go for a stock st205 one IMO.

Thanks fo rthe advice. 205s metal gasket is the plan, skimming ongoing. Will stick to the original turbo and will check which is more feasible, fixing own or or buying the recommended on.

Still appreciate any hint where to get fixed CT26 with reasonable price or any copy versions that can be recommended? Any turbo shops that could mend the turbo, again with a reasonable price?

Turbo rebuilds and hybrids are a minefield. You can hit lucky or unlucky.

My personal choice is generally to go for good secondhand. It's still a lottery how good a one you get but it's less money lost if you get a bad one. If you go this route, the standard ST205 turbo (ct20b) is a worthwhile upgrade - very little loss of bottom end but it doesn't run out of puff at the top. As for where to buy, look in the forums - here, GT4OC (if you can see them), celica club UK, or the MR2 clubs (MK2 rev 2 = 185, rev3 = 205), or look on ebay.

TCB (Linked above) do brand new ones very cheap. I have no feedback on how good they are, but at the price I'm not very hopeful.

If you do go for a refurb, do plenty of reseach and try to get a company with a good reputation. I would guess you have some in your country or follow advice on a UK company.

I have a standard 205 turbo that is low mileage and with no play.
I have also sent items to Finland previously, there would need to be lots of packaging to ensure delivery via courier but it can be done.
Do you not have turbo rebuild companies near to you? I hear there are a lot of Turbo cars in Finland.
I recently sent some suspension to what appears to be a performance car workshop in Valkeakoski, Finland
Perhaps you could PM me for their contact details and ask thier opinion of replacement options

About to send the turbo to a repair shop in Finland (Virtala Racing). Cost estimate is 300-550 euros dependant on the damage.
Those reading Finnish fluently: http://www.professionalmotor.fi/turbohuolto

Thank you for the hints.

That price seems reasonably consistent with what we would pay over here.

Good luck with it.
