Would you be able to have a listen to this and tell me if my hg has gone.

I bought a compression checker connected to the spark plug recess and cranked the engine round. It kept whistling out of plug one.
The whole of the top of the engine is off and I have just been told it doesn't work like that.

I don't know !

I thought the piston is self contained?

No sound on the video ?

You should remove all 4 plugs, then screw the gauge in place of plug 1 (finger tight), then crank the engine while holding the throttle open. You should see the gauge pulse upwards. I normally count about 5 pulses & stop. Repeat for the other 3 cylinders.
You should ideally prevent fuel being injected by removing the efi/ecu fuses first.

If a head gasket leak is great enough to give a noticably low compression reading, I'd expect it to chuck it's water out of the radiator overflow within seconds of pressing the throttle.

What is that wierd clicking noise?

It sounds like a the ratchet on a wrench - are you cranking the engine over using the wrench?

To use the compression tester you have to turn the engine over using the key/starter motor with the ignition disconnected.

Slightly embarrassed, Yes guilty. My top half is off so I have decided I'll change the bits i have purchased then put together the rest and check.

I'm not sure how I can crank the engine with the top mount disconnected.

The throttle body is off and all pipes disconnected. I was told it was ok to do it this way as the cylinder is closed apart from the spark plug hole.

You just turn the engine over - you are not starting it so no need to worry about the top mount etc.

Plus head gasket failure aint likely to show up on a compression test on these engines you need to hydrocarbon test the coolant system with engine running to confirm whether or not you have combustion gases in there ;-)

Martin I'm gonna put all the bits on that I have bought them put back together. do the compression check for curiosity.

Then get in touch with you to do the hg now I have purchased a 205 replacement, if that is ok with you.

The engine stuff is beyond my skills I conclude.

Hi guys. Just to let you know the beast is running. Replaced the bits I had and left the fuel filter till I can get a flared wrench.

The timing is spot on.

I did a compression check for curiosity this tested within spec from the manual. Woohoo.

I know Martin said it's not definitive but it passed. When it's running ill check the HCs.

I've got new discs but they are the wrong size. So I'll change them and fit them. Clean the calipers and general area. Then bodywork preppin.

I'm gonna get a new sump gasket because the oil is still dripping. Maybe that maybe not. But it is collecting directly under the lowest point of the sump but it could be traveling from elsewhere

Thanks to those who have been patient and helped me.
I have learned.:-)
