Well, my white ST185 went to Scotland for a holiday with a family member,
and again another car coming back on an RAC recovery truck :(

Sound familiar to some of you??

Well, turns out that the gearbox ran out of oil due to one or more leaks in the cooler pipes somewhere, not tracked it down yet,
work in progress but I can see oil running/blowing towards the back of the car underneath.

Seems that I have lost some drive to the NS front wheel, and it sounds bad, with grinding under acceleration.
Also, gear change is very stiff.

To cap it all the rear diff also ran out of oil due to another leak and grinds just the same:(

I did know this was leaking but never got the opportunity fix it before it went on holiday, my bad :(

I have a spare 205 diff which I think is a straight swap?

But I have no idea of the condition?

Rear sub frame had seen better days as well so needs replacing as well.

So, what are sensible and affordable repair or upgrade options?

Advice appreciated :)

:( Sorry to read this :( . Replace the diff and g/box with 205 items ? And source a reasonably clean rear subframe , a jdm might be a little better condition wise depending on the time and use in this country :). I guess it depends on your willingness to keep the car and get down and dirty with it :? . You of course could find more to do after removing the engine , its a gamble :? .

Yeh, not sure what I am going to find, but would like to keep it on the road, to many being scrapped IMO?

205 rear diff is the same, but subframe, drive shafts, hubs etc. are all different.

I have a few spare 185 rear ends complete so will be available very cheap.

Gearbox wise, I would go for a secondhand one. Supposedly the CS gearbox has tougher synchromesh than the normal 185 but TBH not a lot to choose between standard 185, cs or 205 gearbox. All will fit and not massive differences in ratios. The sought after one is from the lightweight - if you can get one at a sensible price, sell it again and buy a new car on the profits
If you do the job yourself it's an engine out job. A few experienced places with the correct kit can get the gearbox off without removing the engine, Martin Kingston being one of them I gather.

The rear subframe will take years to rust to state of being unsafe. The first glance looks bad on lots of them. But half an hour with a wire brush .... Then a paint makes all the difference. Having a complete rear end to swap makes things easy tho.

Four forks stake

I think Don might have a 185 gearbox, worth checking

Don't believe Darryl either. Expect to spend a couple of miserable hours with a wire cup to clean the subframe and another hour cleaning up the aftermath. Most do seem to come up ok though

Maybe said family member needs something more robust and easily repairable. I'm thinking dog sled

I have heard it said that anything with wheels or *bleep* is trouble. Lets hope he's getting all his bad luck with the wheels.

As Steve says, I do have a spare 185 box if you need one.

A local car breaker told me that CD player used to skip when the car went over bumps :(

It has stopped doing it at the moment, going over bumps that it, or anything else for that matter

I do trust the local car breaker, as he lives in my house

Only Joking guys, and thanks for the offer Adam :D
