One other thing to try - with the car standing still and engine running, push the clutch down and try going slowly into reverse. If it grinds and keeps gringing then the clutch is dragging. (No synchro on reverse).

Also, try going into the forward gears and see if they go in easily, then switch engine off & try again. If they go in easily with engine off but not with engine running also indicates clutch drag.

Yes, the car has indeed been garaged since not long after my original post. :(

Now my financial circumstances should be slowly returning to normal, so I want to get on with it.

Thanks for the additional ideas, I have looked into it and all signs point to the clutch.

I want to have ago at this myself, as I've been hankering for a 'project', as much out of curiosity as money-saving etc. I may use this as an opportunity to replace some other bits after I have it apart.

I'm wondering how much space I would need around the car for this job... I have a single garage which has plenty headroom and length but only 500mm either side of the motor when it's in. I don't really want to do this on the drive as I have kids running about and this might take me a few nights/weekends as I plod along using the odd bit of spare time. I have the option of another driveway, but this would probably limit my times to do the work, so it's not my first choice.

Tools and equipment are not really a problem, I have access to an engine hoist, axle stands and most garage tools. As for know-how... well, I've done a few tricky jobs on the car now, and I have a mechanic pal who has offered his assistance for a reasonable biscuit rate.

Don't need much width, only enough to be able to pull wheels off and then pull hubs outwards to pop driveshafts out of gearbox. Most of the access is from the front. You do need enough height to lift the car up over the engine as it comes out underneath.

I am planning to write a 'how-to' guide in the near future which will include engine & gearbox removal which you will probably find helpful.

Oh, here's a question... is there any difference between UK and JDM clutches? Some sites seem to indicate there is a difference.

Nor mine.

IMO, if your car is near standard and you're not planning big launches then go for OEM clutch (available from TCB afaik). Whatever, use the genuine toyota release bearing not the cheap plastic thing that comes with most afermarket kits.

Hello again! I've not had as much time as I'd have liked to push on with this, but I have made progress. Got the clutch apart at the weekend, and found the root of the problems (I hope!!). One of the springs in the disc had broken free of it's mount and had been fouling the flywheel bolts.

I had purchased an exedy standard clutch replacement, but as I am keen on the odd trackday and have aspirations of hill-climbs I have since changed my mind... especially after seeing this!

Interesting post. Taking the engine out of my car is where I feel my next steps are (from a mechanical ability progression) however it always seems like quite a daunting task.

Once you've popped it back in I'd be grateful to hear of how you found the whole thing?

I've got a few little niggly thing that I feel would be better fixed / not bodged if I took the engine out.

I have found it an interesting but lengthy task. To be fair, I started with the sole objective of doing the clutch, but as things have progressed I have been adding to the wishlist.
Money and time are the scarce resources I have to manage around bringing up a young family... hence why I opted for doing the work in my cramped single garage meaning it can take as long as it takes!
My next task is to clean up the engine and box and get a new uprated clutch on. I'll let you know how it all goes!

She lives again! Wow, what an epic mechanical journey that was! Now to get to the MOT station asap and get enjoying the last of the summer. Will need to run the clutch in, and i've a few 'snags' to do but I now have my Clutch and superstrut replacement scout badges! :D
