Does indeed look like the seller messed up not diagnosing it properly. His loss, your gain :)

real sad thing is it was his mechanic that told him it would cost over a grand to fix and scared him like all daft garages do :(

still £50 fix is a lot less than i planned for meaning i can probably go collect the car over the next few weeks rather than budget for january pickup :D

The cynic in me says that the garage involved would possibly have done a bit more fault finding, found the actual fault - fixed it with a new set of leads and then still charged the large sum of money.

I have also heard of scams where a garage says something like this knowing full well what the actual fault is and then offers to buy the car off the owner for a really cheap price, then fixes it and sells on for a large profit.

Wouldn't surprise me, other than the mechanic would actually need to be competent. The number of times I end up mending my sisters car after a mechanic has f***d it up suggests otherwise.

and as quick as that, car is completely fixed. :P

new HT lead and shakedowns rough running returned no codes, bit more investigation turned up adestroyed sparkplug, full set of 4 and the car runs up to boost with no issues :D

bill has gone up slightly but still far less than the 4 figures the previous owner was quoted ;)

well.

flew to southampton on saturday and picked up the GT4 from Bek. car drove perfectly the entire journey home all 500 miles without issue so im well pleased and relieved that this was a simple fix.

the car is almost original but does have a few minor issues that i will bring up elsewhere

thanks again for the advice :D

My mates mechanic quoted £2500+ to repair an st202 because the cam belt slipped and all the valves in the head were mashed up....(on a non interference engine.)
£30 cam belt job done, he paid me with a bottle of Vodka :)
