Hi guys

im putting a deposit down on another GT4 today which has HG issues. a good friend of mine is going to collect the car and repair the HG and do the timming belt at the same time. the car in question has been well looked after before it overheated I haven't seen the car myself to check it over and im really looking for what to look at as per a cause of the overheating. I am more used to the st202 which only overheats if the radiator or waterpump fails (both very very rare - havent heard of one proven HG failure)

so in short what causes a standard St205 to overheat?

Fan failure and a long traffic jam.
Leak - often water pump but can be old hose splitting.
On 185's head gaskets are often blown when running increased boost. Doesn't apply to the 205.

Cracked blocks are more common than head gasket failures on the 205 from my experience, however it's not unknown to get warpage due to overheating causing the gasket to leak.

Are you sure the head gasket has failed? Very unusual in a 205. Suggest you give the head a skim as part of the HG replacement. Also, as Chris says, check the cylinders for signs of cracking. Usually only a problem if someone has run silly levels of boost. I would also thoroughly flush the engine with and treat with cooling system cleaner (available from Halfrauds) then fill with Toyota For Life Red coolant to avoid recurrence of the problem.

it will get a full inspection before any plans are made, Bek will be picking it up and repairing it for me so no doubt he will have the head pulled off in now time. put deposit down and collection is next weekend.

im guessing HG failure on the st205 is abotu as rare as it is on the st202

as i said its been used in london and is in standard form so no increased boost or daftness so it may be pump or hose has let some water out and its overheated whilst sat in london traffic. hopefully its all good though as its hard to find an original condition car with good history

Could be a simple rad cap failure.

Id get a sniffer test done first to see if you have a cylinder leak first before you take it apart.

Well car is getting collected on saturday, so speaking to the seller i asked if it overheats whilst driving as it needs to be driven outside of the low emmisions zone so it can be collected (only a few miles) and i have been told its not actually overheating. symptoms i have been told are

1. its running but running rough
2. there was a ping like noise before it started running bad
3. white smoke out the back

its all pointing towards HG but fluid leaking into the combustion chamber, the guy is no expert and has been frightened by a few garages saying repairs could hit 4 figures (doesn't bother me as its cheap enough)

Could this actually be pointing towards the HG. or is there anything else on a st205 that could cause rough running and white smoke out the exhaust

If it's not overheating or losing water then I doubt it's HG or cracked block.

WHite smoke in exhaust could be turbo seal on exhaust side but that wouldn't explain running rough. Could potentially be seriously broken piston.

See what the smoke smells of and how white it is. Oil being heated in exhaust rather than burnt tends to come out white/grey rather than blue but it still smells oily. Also check for usual signs of brankcase pressure - clouds of smoke out of the dipstick tube etc.

Im hoping its just turbo oil seals, because if its piston damage then its a right off to me. lets remain positive though :D

Normally turbo seals only smoke after engine is left to idle for a few minutes

should know by tomorrow afternoon, compresion test is getting done which should tell if something internal is gone, if that comes back good will need to look at the turbo etc

A compression test sometimes doesn't detect ringlands, particularly if they are not badly gone. A leakdown test would reveal more.

seller was way off the mark, the assumtion of rough running being something to do with HG failure has turned out to be a broken HT lead on no4 meaning it was running on 3 cylinders.

Car is getting a shakedown test today to see if everything else is ok, and will report back on the findings.

The advice given above is fantastic though and will take it all on board should i encounter any engine problems in the future. but for now this is looking like the bargain of the century :D
