Or should I say poxies

As some of you may realise, I've been driving my MR2 round the last couple of weeks to run it in. The tyres are what was fitted when I aquired the car and I hadn't paid much attention other than realising they weren't all the same make.

In the damp weather we've been having the car has been a bit of a 'handful' shall we say. Actually embarrasing at times as there have been occasions following trucks slowly round roundabouts on opposite lock (me not the lorry) with barely any throttle.

I had just assumed they were nasty budget tyres on the back, but out of curiosity I had a quick look this morning and it turns out they're both toyo proxies. Interestingly enough, on the front are 'CHAMPIRO' tyres, and I've yet to get them sliding as the back lets go much sooner.

The only thing I can say is better about the toyos compared to my other hated tyre (falcons) is that you don't get that horrible sound of furniture being dragged across a wooden floor as they slide.

Which model Proxes?
How much thread left/evenly worn or not?
How old are they?

I never had issues with T1-S and later T1-R on my dailies. Now that I've tried Advan AD08R I'm not switching back though.. :D

Hateful tyres, tried them on the ST205, Corolla and the Skoda, grip is OK in the dry but crap in the wet. Went back to Goodyear eagles! could never understand why people rave about them???

Surprised that you find the Toyo's are of the Ditchfinder/Hedgeseeker persuasion? Age, wear, suspension geometry issue? I don't find the Toyo Proxy T1R's quite as grippy as the T1S but they seem to be quite hard wearing on my ST205. I use Yokohama A048's for track days but they're a bit noisy on the road. Had very good experience of Yokohama Advan Neova LTS tyres on my Elise S1. Great on the road, lots of grip and quiet too while on track they are grippy but don't destroy the shoulder of the tyre like most road tyres. Ideal all round tyre IMO.

The non turbo 5s engine in the mr2 is tail happy, so of course the turbo will be ! Get used to it, its great fun on the non turbo..... So controllable, get a nice steady spooling turbo, after a couple of thousand miles, you can start charging people for "fun rides in the rain"

As I said to Alex long time ago , mr2 best affordable fun car to really drive.

They're a good budget tyre, not the best tyre
I don't find them bad on the four but they aren't a patch on the pilot sports I had before

I thought grip in the mr2 was ok until you deliberately provoked it

Don't know about age as they were on the car when I bought it, tread is getting low although they did have more initially.

I drove my GT4 the other day on budget £50/corner tyres which are even more worn and I was going tround corners much quicker in the same conditions (Drove the 2 to work then swapped cars and went on in the 4).

In the dry, the proxies are fine and the 2 has more grip overall than the 4 and is much more responsive. This is consistant with my experience of Japanese tyres in general, they seem to be optimised for dry tarmac, not too shody on normal 'wet tarmac' but drop off the edge of their comfort zone on the wet leaves / muddy / thick layer of salt roads that we get down this way in winter. I used to run yokohama on my old escort going back a few years now. I found them very good in the dry and not too shoddy but nothing special on the slippery stuff. They are the only Japanese tyre I would consider paying good money for based on current experience.

I will swap back & front on the MR2 just to test whether the cheapo tyres are in fact better in the wet and will update when I've done so.

It sometimes needs very little provoking !!!!!

To me, a tyre which takes a 'dislike' to some surfaces and just lets go is just dangerous as it's unpredictable. There are some corners which are a bit more slippery than others - like the one we were discussing the other day  - but when you have a tyre that's like hitting ice on such a corner it's lethal as there's no predicting it.

Dunlop D01J's on my Elise S1 were seriously scary in the wet. It would try and swap ends even at 30mph  It didn't mean the Dunlops were rubbish, just that they were the wrong equipment for the conditions. I remember a friend driving his D01J shod RX7 down the AutoRoute to Le Mans in the wet at crazy speeds and thinking he was completely mad.

It does seem to have been extra slippy out there yesterday & today. We have had a pretty long dry spell (just friggin cold) and the damp/greasy slime we now have on the roads combined with a summer tyre in the recent low temps we have had is not a great combo.

The pretty poor (even in good conditions) Avon ZZ-3 on the back of the M3 (temporary stop gap) have been scary the last 2 days on some roads. I even un-stuck the front Michelin PS2 today at very low speed which is a first for me.

I don't rate the Toyos in the wet either and the goodyear F1 were much better.

I haven't been a huge fan of the Toyo T1R's I currently have fitted to the car. I am looking forward to wearing them out and swapping them for something else. The question is what. Since the Eagle F1 GSD3 is no longer available my go to tyre is gone :(
