Looking on the TCBparts web site, they list two different types of calliper rebuild kits for the front callipers and two for the rear callipers, one covers up to August 1995' the other after August 1995. The fronts are different prices, the later ones being £10 more expensive, but the rears, the later set is almost half the price of the earlier set.

But it also lists the pistons and one piston covers all years so the piston size is the same.

Does anyone know what the difference is between the years?

When I ordered the bits for my rebuild I asked TCB and they actually said to me that they were not sure as the bits appear identical.

I noticed from researching around that there appears to be a difference in the seal from the brake hose to the caliper with one of the versions being two separate washers and the other being a linked washer.

It would be good to get two known early and late callipers side by side so a comparison could be done. Steve P would be an ideal candidate (hint hint) as I know he has both early and late cars.

Whilst the cost difference is large it's still not a massive amount of money, I'd just buy the correct kit for my car. :)

I definitely recall Steve P mentioning the differences but the details escape me

I don't recall any differences in the calipers Don. The hubs yes but not brakes

One thing I would say is make 150% sure that the rebuild kits are genuine Toyota as advertised. I got some Brakes Intl kits and they were shi er substandard

I will. You wouldn't believe some of the brakes I have seen over the years, jimmyGs ST205 was one of the worst, when we came to check his brakes and replace the master cylinder we just couldn't get the brakes working very well. So after a bit of head scratching we removed a newly refurbished brake calliper to find that when it had been refurbished, instead of using new pistons, they had made their own, and quite badly too, not smooth at all, it's a wonder the brakes worked at all. From that day on I have never trusted anyone but myself to refurbish brakes callipers (apart from MKautos as I know they do a good job) I can never understand why people say leave brakes to the professionals as in my experience they do a worse job than anyone, as above, cross threaded bolts, badly fitted pads incorrectly fitted etc etc the list goes on.

The only difference between these 2 kits is as mike has hit on the copper washers for the brake pipe to caliper, on is 2 seperates and the other is linked together as one, both interchangeable

That's good to know as a few pennies can be saved :)
