Hi.
Am i right in thinking that a boost controller is not needed if running an aftermarket ecu and wanting to run to 1.2 bar?
What about a piggyback ecu?

You still need some means of raising the boost. Some ECU's can do this and some people utilise the standard boost control valve to achieve this.

Others use the ECU with just the solenoid from a boost controller.

Many folks will stick with an independent boost controller.

Piggyback is the samething really, some I think can control the boost via the OEM valve.

So, if you were to raise boost without adding a solenoid, would you have to uprate the actuator instead then?
can you get a universal solenoid to interface to an aftermarket ecu?

you either use a boost control solenoid to bleed boost pressure away from the actuator or you uprate the actuator. So yes :-)

You can get universal boost control solenoids - IIRC a VAG unit is commonly used by lots of aftermarket ECUs.

Am I right in thinking that if you go down the upgrade actuator route, you're boost is limited by the actuator boost rating only (and you get that tail off as the actuator starts to open.)
Boost controller route would give more aggressive boost climb as you are using the actuator in the (digital) region? I think I explained it right??? If this is the case, are these 2 scenarios noticeable drive wise?

IMHO the ideal scenario is to have an uprated actuator to a level of the minimum boost pressure you could want to run and use an aftermarket ECU with solenoid to get any additional boost.

Stronger (higher boost pressure) actuators are more likely to hold boost to the red line than a lower rated one, a good ecu will also monitor boost pressure and adjust the solenoid duty cycle to achieve the target boost pressure. Lower grade ECUs and most aftermarket boost controllers just run a set solenoid duty cycle so are likely to vary boost pressure at different RPM and gears.
