Hi all

I have a 185 gt4 and i have owned it for around 3 years and it's come to the time
where I either sell it or do the work required

I really want to keep it but if it costs too much it will have to go which I will be gutted about

Here is the situation:

Clutch really needs doing been needing changing for a long time and I was advised
to change some other bits while engine is out such as

water pump
front crank shaft oil seal
rear crank shaft oil seal
driver side drive shaft oil seal
passenger side drive shaft oil seal
timing belt
hydraulic tensioner

plus I need part of the prop shaft as when I change gear there is a bang, it's the rubber mount
I believe in the prop shaft

also i may need a new hub on the front passenger side or the flange but getting it taken
out in a few days so will know for sure what the situation is

I have already contacted TCB and they were the ones that recommended I change the bits above
while everything is out

Thy said the "solid ace" clutch will be good enough as mine is only pushing out around 220 - 250bhp

I have just entered some part numbers in that OEM search and some of them are coming out really
cheap but they are in austrailia and not sure how much post will be etc

I have some other bits to do on the car but these are the main jobs, if I can get all this
done for a reasonable price I will be able to keep the car :-)

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

Paul

Where are you based if you want a reccomendation for a good mechanic. People who know the car well will take a fraction of the time to do the work and will save a lot of money.

TCB would be my choice of supplier for all those parts, I think most will be shown on their website with price.

Hydraulic tensioners tend not to go wrong as long as they aren't pushed in too hard to reset them - a common mistake is people getting impatient. If you want to save a bit of cash this is the item I'd save on as it's a fair chunk of cash.

In addition to the above list, get the mechanic to make sure the oil pump bolts are tight. These sometimes work loose then the gasket starts leaking & get damaged generating a much bigger job.

Also worth changing cam seals & possibly rocker cover gasket as the latter may well leak after being disturbed.

I think the solid ace clutch is identical to the OEM Toyota one down to tooling marks. Double check with TCB this is the case. If so, it is certainly the clutch I'd reccomend unless you're going to start doing drag racing with hard launches.

p.s. clonking on gear change is likely to be rear diff mount rather than propshaft, although propshaft mount isn't unknown

I have also seen a cheaper timing belt kit and a cheaper water pump on ebay
than what TCB charge. The price on the timing belt kit is about £35 cheaper and the water
pump is about £25 cheaper

Is this a good idea?

I would only use an OEM water pump. TCB sell these.

From TCB:

Quote:
Water Pump Pattern Make

Celica ST 185 GT4 (1989 - 1993)

Celica ST 183 4WS

Celica ST 182 (1989 - 1993)

Part number: CTY21021

Price: £36.44 + vat

They don't list a genuine one for 185 but pretty sure it's the same as the 205 which is £60 ish. I've used their pattern ones with no problem.

Quote:
Timing belt J1122016 £21.22 + vat
Timing belt Tensioner & bracket J1142023 £32.86 + vat
Timing belt Idler bearing J1142002 £17.57 + vat

Not sure how ebay can be £35 cheaper unless they're just selling the belt.

As I said, take it very gently pushing the pin back in on the tensioner and it should be fine if you want to keep costs down. This is less likely to fail than a cheap bearing or belt.

As for a mechanic, I'm not aware of any particularly local to you. The closest ones that spring to mind are Ian Smith at TR&D, Nottingham who should be ok for what you need doing. Also heard good reports of Stuart at Japex, hertforshire from a suffolk guy. Both a bit of a trek but the cost of getting there may well be outweighed by the cost saving from someone doing the job quicker. Also worth getting a quote from Martin Kingston (on here) based at Blackburn.
