Hi guys I was just wondering what you guys would recommend I check and in what order. Basically I have an st205 celica and it doesn't feel as fast as it should to me. It might just be a placebo thing but I'm sure it doesn't seem right when compared to lesser cars. All it has modified is intake and exhaust. I have checked ignition timing which is fine and plan to check cam timing ASAP. I have sealed up any exhaust leaks I have found also. It hits full boost fine at arround 3000rpm to 3200rpm and it idles pretty steady at 750rpm. I'm not sure what else I should think about checking and unfortunately don't know anyone nearby to compare my car to .
Thanks for reading

get it on a dyno, not a true indicator but at least a start.

And if i'm honest without meaning to cause concern some are just slower, some are dog engines.

I remember way back when I test drove a few for my brother what must be 6 or 7 years back now and the newest one I drove and looked great was just a total dog engine wise, it looked clean engine wise, sounded smooth but just was flat as a fart compared to what mine was when it was standard.

Then the next one was rough bodywork wise but a total powerhouse and pulled like a train for a stock car.

Get it on a dyno and see (ish) what its doing

Yeh I suppose your right mate I just can't bare the tyre damage that comes with a dyno run lol. I hope it's just me expecting too much though but for what it's worth il get a dyno run. Cheers mate

Tyre damage on a dyno? The car will only be on there a few minutes?

Is it not too bad? From what I heard they shred them up a bit sometimes. I'm probably wrong though iv never used one sorry

I've never noticed any wear from my car being dyno tested.

Your tyres will be fine on the dyno. If you want some good figures make sure they are inflated to the 'correct' pressure. Of course I'd never knowingly over-inflate at a rolling road shootout, honest guv ;-)

Hmmm so they really aren't that accurate? Lol. There is also a hub dyno in my area do people rate these as being more Accurate? I suppose either will be good enough for what I want I presume they will be able to interpret the results fine either way.

thats why i say ish numbers, if you be honest with the operator they can do it correctly to as much as they can.

You don't want a biggest numbers power run, you need as accurate as you can.

Either that or the bum / time dyno or do a standing start from 0 to the rev limiter in 2nd gear, that should be around 63mph or there abouts.

my last dyno was just to see how the fuel pump was performing at full boost, not a power run but just to check everything was working as it should at full load and full boost as it has done 141,000 miles and happy days it was.

As for damage as above, been a fair few times on dyno and no damage here :)

If mine was on the road I'd have been happy to meet for a benchmark test on a 'non-public' road. As things are, with the engine and gearbox on the deck it miiiight be a while.

0-60 should be around the 6 second mark, if you can use a smartphone app or friend with a timer. Gives you some idea I suppose.

I used Dastek in Dalgety bay for a dyno run, no tyre probs. I've never heard that one before.

Believe it or not the guy who told me that used to work at dastek in dalgety bay. He was just a hydraulics engineer though who worked on the dumps rather than running cars on it. He now works at my work. That would have been perfect though lorro but I realise your car is a project right now lol. The phone app idea seems quite smart though. Good for a wee free check to give a rough idea. Thanks for the input guys

Well 0-60 in about six seconds with a hard launch and a terrible 1st to 2nd gear change. I actually think I could probably manage 5.5 if I done it again so looks like I was imagining things lol. I'm not sure I want to launch as hard as that ever again though because the smell of burning clutch wasn't nice. Looks like it's time to put the ebc on to feel the power again

Post subject:  Re: Celica sluggish

good stuff, they should do 60 in around the 5-5.5 mark so thats good.

Yeah don't launch the standard clutch, it doesn't like it. haha

It will last forever if you don't launch it, I have done loads of trackdays on mine but never launch it.

I'm very tempted to see if I could get close to the 5 second mark but I instantly felt bad for launching it like that. For a moment the revs built but I didn't go anywhere then it just shot off leaving behind a smell of burning clutch. I don't think it would last very long if I made a habit of that although it was rather fun. It's always good to know that it's running as it should though.
