Afternoon gents :) , ok after spending some time over at the garage this morning and trying various tests and suggestions I've come to the conclusion its not the tubby :D . In fact I'm now going to wait until the bbq to get more input from folk far more knowledgeable than myself .
Rolled the car out without turning over or firing up , so stone cold sober . Checked the oil level and added just under half litre , this has used that much in approx 300 miles , some of which were giving it some up the hill..lol . Took the plugs out of 1 & 3 and...

Not at all sooty and a greyish colour .
Took the intake off the tubby ,

A trace of oil in the intake , nothing on / out of the tubby , compressor wheel has a slight up / down movement , nothing in / out and feels good . Started the car and took it out for 10mins and warmed up , left idling for another 10mins with no signs of any smoke , black white or blue . Whilst idling i removed the dipstick with no signs of anything escaping from the tube , admittedly i didn't rev it , mainly because at this point i was on my own .
After all this I took it out again to try and replicate the scenario of last weeks driving , once after a sustained use of boost and then backing off to an acceptable cruising speed it did emit blue tinged smoke , quite a cloud and very noticeable in the rear mirror then it went back to nothing noticeable in a couple of seconds :? .

Smoke on boost - blowby on rings (oil breather & intake will be dripping with oil). OR thrust bearing gone on turbo - you would notice endfloat (in/out play) so shaft pushes across with pressure and opens up a gap in a seal. If it goes to intake, intercooler will be dripping with oil while intake side of turbo is dry. If it goes to exhaust, you will just see smoke, normally white/grey with tinge of blue.

Smoke on overrun is likely sucking oil up past rings (possibly oil ring problem) or possibly valve stem oil seals, although generally the latter tends to cause huge cloud of smoke on first start up long before any smoke while running.

By the way, is your oil breather going through a catch can to atmosphere, or going back into the intake ?
If atmos, disregard what I said above about breather & intake, would be just breather.

Hmmm it was going catch can and back to intake before having the engine dropped out last month Chris . Now it vents straight back to the intake .

Had same problem with a golf the other day. Did a leak down test and it just dissapeared within minutes. Maybe worth a try?

Most probably yes but as a start i would just try to see if any oil or wetness on top of pistons. Cant remember fully what we used but we actually poured liquid into spark hole with piston at bottom and it all just seeped past rings after few minutes.

Just a further question on this matter gents please , how many breathers from the engine should there be :? ? I only have one breather from the rocker cover to the intake , and thinking back I'm almost sure there was another from the lower rear of the lump...hmmm , or am i dreaming again.
