There follows some pics of my 185 tackling Prescott hill climb on Sun , one or two were taken quite early in the day , the latter two much later in the day which caused me to curtail my exploits :( . Symptoms obvious , as well as the general oily smell and the oil level being half of what it was :( .

On the start line for the first time.

Cant be certain , but I believe these were taken during the first couple of runs ?

These were later in the day , possibly the last or last but one run :( . So ladies and gentlemens...what are your first impressions and what should I be doing about it ?
On the plus side I was one of the lucky winners of a run up the hill in the LFA :D , not all doom and gloom then... !

Car is looking really nice Clive :)

Sorry to hear of the woes however.

How is it sounding? Is it smoking lots on idle/boost or both?

Well now , you asked...lol . Car is sounding fine Mike , more than one person told me it sounded sweet going up and still does  . It did smoke a tad going on boost and idle but that was generally black and rich , however that's given way to the blueish haze seen going on boost and off the loud pedal now .
Strange thing is it got me back from Prescott as well as it got me there :) , but the afr's i saw going were a lot higher on the way back :? . Typically it was cruising 5th gear 3k revs reading between 12.3 - 12.7, returning it was reading anywhere from high 13's to 14.6 ? .
Somethings amiss , but tbh , its probably my own fault . As much as I intended taking it easy , once there its easy to push harder .. .
Oh and i managed to obtain something for you .

Could be turbo or rings.

Were forged pistons fitted at the rebuild ?

Hi Clive,

If it is still sounding fine then maybe something turbo related. The AFR's changing is an odd one, was the fuel pump changed as part of the work?

I highly doubt its your fault. The car should be able to stand up to a bit of stick, its not as if you were doing hot laps of the Nurburgring!

Probably time for a curry soon so perhaps the collective can mull it over!

Given your luck with it recently I'll guess rings, blown turbo, cracked block and twisted chassis

An edumacated guess would be rings/borewash, those cruising AFR numbers are quite rich

No not forged , running a standard build with a link ecu controlling things

Well I'm hoping it is turbo related tbh , but knowing my fortunes its bound to want new rings and a hone at the very least .

Best thing I can think of is to get it over to RAR shop next month if you can. There's a BBQ there which should lure quite a bit of distilled GT4 wisdom into the area (or a clusterf*ck of club members as its known in the trade)

Check the basics first, pull the dipstick and check for crankcase pressure. Might sound odd but sniff the dipstick and see if it smells of normal oil. Sometimes compression leaky engines give the oil a petrol/exhaust type smell
Pull a plug and look at the tip colour. Whip the induction hose off and check the turbo for play

As Steve says, running a bit rich for cruising - should be in the region of 14.7. I normally err. on the weak side of this so 15 ish.

Ah right ho , i will get a few things looked at over the next week and report back anything found that's not as it should be . Bought a comms lead for the link today Chris :) , so if you remember your lappy with the software then maybe have a look at the map ? Then a bbq seems at the very least an excellent idea

At the risk of repeating the obvious a good test for worn turbo seals is to warm the engine up properly with a brisk run round local roads then let it idle for 10-15 minutes on the driveway. If it starts smoking then it's usually a pretty obvious sign that the turbo seals are gone. I thought that you were running a rebuilt engine and turbo so this shouldn't really happen unless the engine was started without priming the turbo oil feed. Worn rings and/or valve guides/seals would normally manifest different symptoms such as mentioned above.
The change in AFR's seems odd although if it's on the closed loop cycle it might indicate that the O2 sensor has failed?
I'm sure there will be lots of gratuitous advice dispensed at the RaR barbie meet but hopefully we can narrow it down

Hi clive. You dont seem to get it easy do you with your car?!
Looks great in pics.
Anyways if any part of your turbo is gone from part failure it will still be under warrenty from us. I remember you saying about how quickly your builder was mapping after engine build and was concerning that he didnt allow enough time for tops to be knocked off bores. If this is the case oil could be becoming contaminated and causing problems.....
If you need any help give us a call.
May even pop up to r and r to say hello again.

Any help and or advice would of course be welcome :) , Jon thanks for the offer of warranty and yes it would be good to see you at the bbq . As I've said , i will do more investigation over the next week . The car obviously took exception at being thrown around a bit...one thing i did find very impressive was the chassis / handling , nice to know the polybushes and rear arb got a workout :)
