Post subject:  rear wheel bearing change
Hi, I removed the old wheel bearing but have a slight issue with the new one.
As I recall doing the other side, the bearing has 2 inner shells that need to come apart.
yeah, I can't get them apart..... I've tried gently tapping the shell with a brass rod but does not budge. Don't want to try any more in case I damage it.
I seem to remember that I could pull them apart by hand.

The bearing came from TCB and I'm pretty sure its the right one.

Any ideas?

generic picture, see the seam in the middle.. I can't pull then apart even though there is about 3mm play and can spin independently so I know they are 2 pieces..

also, just out of curiosity, could rear cv joints cause noise from the rear (no pun) I can only describe it a excessive road noise at 30mph+
the noise is coming from passenger side rear.

Rear diff has been changed about a year ago due to breather getting blocked and it spat out all the oil out the seals. (replacement diff could still have been bad?)

with the rear drive shaft flapping about as the hub is is off at the moment, Is there anything else I can check?

Just drift/press in the new bearing - applying pressure on the outer race ...

Tyres can cause road noise like worn bearings - I mistakenly replaced both rear bearings on my old ST205 WRC to find it was the Advan tyres which were responsible !

When I've done that, how to I press the spline (bit with the wheel studs) into the inner races without stressing the bearing as the inner races are not resting against anything?

Toyota say to press in whole bearing via the inner races. So that means there is no risk of damaging bearing?

Does the SST transfer the load to the outer of the bearing?

Still, when it comes to inserting/pressing spline into bearing, is that not going to stress the inner races and try to rip out the bearings?
It was a whole lot easier then the 2 races could be split apart....

I think that diagram may be a bit misleading. The sst looks like a flattish plate to push on the outer race with the plunger from the press in the middle.

To press in the drive flange, use a large socket or similar on the inner race on the opposite side.

I see what you mean. Looks like the SST plate provided equal force on the inner and outer race simultaneously to push the thole bearing in in one go. i.e. the plate looks like its stepped.#

Thanks, didn't know the seals were different sizes....
