hi all

after fitting some refurbished callipers on the front and bleeding them twice I still feel that there I a bit of travel on the pedal and thy just don't feel quite right
now I have not done a full bleed just on the fronts is this ok?
is there anything else I could do to improve brake feel?

How did you bleed them? I always find its a 2 person job, easibleed type kits have never worked for me

You are supposed to start bleeding from the caliper furthest away from the master cylinder. Normally this is the left rear then progress to right rear, left front and right front. I found when I replaced the brake master cylinder on my Elise that it was a two man job and we had to go round the car twice bleeding the calipers. We made sure we left a bit of time for the fluid to settle before bleeding for a second time. Not sure if this made a difference but the brake pedal was transformed from spongy after the first round of bleeding to a nice firm pedal after the second bleeding.

Interestingly the Elise handbook says this won't work and you need all sorts of special tools at a Lotus dealer to do the job. Complete cobblers!

On a related note, it would do no harm to completely flush the brake lines and reservoir of old fluid. This is supposed to be done every three or four years max. I found it made a big difference to my ST205 brakes when I changed the fluid. It probably hadn't been changed since it left the Toyota production line in Japan

If you clamped the hoses. And never let the reservoir run dry then just bleeding the calipers you've changed is fine. If the reservoir has run dry. Then you're in for a load of bleeding, especially on abs.

If you've fitted new pads or they've swapped places or aren't aligned the same then they may be spongey for a few tens of miles.

Yeah hoses clamped and never let run dry but im going to give a full bleed tomorow and see how it is after that

If the 205 has the same brake pipe arrangement as the 185, the right hand side rear is the furthest from the master cylinder due to its pipes crossing the shell from left to right.

Well full bleed was done yeasterday and brake feel much better still a little travel at the top but i remember this is usual but there is a little clunk on the brake pads when i first put the brakes on any ideas?

What type of pads are you running? The backing plates might be slightly undersize. Also, have you fitted the 'P' clips to the brake pins/pads? They often get forgotten about or go missing.

The P clips are shown in the top diagram as 47789A and 47799. They have a metal spring which keeps the pads from moving in the calipers and making a clonking sound.

mmm no I don't but I have changed the rotation of the retainer clip and that has sorted it
