hi all,
not been on for a while. need some help please despo.
pulled in at the garage saturday night switched off engine and there was a loud pop then water started flooding out the bottom along with a lot of smoke.
I NOW SEE THE NECCESSITY FOR THE VENTURI VENTS TO BE THE RIGHT WAY ROUND.
I had a look this morn and put a bit more fluid it started to leak from just behind where my cat is. excuse my ineptness. the point is where i cant see from top or bottom.
what is the black tank thing at the bottom of the car it was dripping from there.
but i am not sure if it was coming from the seal bit where all the nuts are. or it was from a pipe and collecting there.
could it be the botttom gasket. im scared
thanks very very nuch.
mahender

Mahender - what model do you have?

What colour is the top of your radiator?

Are all your water hoses in one piece?

hi Kris,
The top of my radiator has always been clean and silver or do you mean inside the cap?
all the top hoses seem to be intact like i said i have just jacked it up to see underneath, but cannot see the hoses properly they seem tto be ok.
i ran the engine with the little fluid i had and it started to coem from this point on the black tank thing ( is that the sump) directly above where the exhaust joins the cat. but it may be from from further up near the top part of the cat and dripping down and collecting .
this bottom bit is that the bottom end gaskett.
just a point kris the water was cold.

If you have water pouring out I dubt it'd be a gasket....they go slowly, you'd notice a drop in performance and a drop in coolant level.
Sounds like a burst pipe or hose more likely.
The thermostat housing is situated underneath and behind the alternator. there is a hose that connects to the thermostat housing. the thermostat housing is connected by two x 10mm bolts. Might be worth checking that at least. maybe the clip used to clamp the hose onto the thermostat housing has broken and made the pipe come off under pressure. have a look there Mahender.

I must admit it does sound like a leak from the thermostat housing given the locations your describing.

Either the hose connection from the housing to the pipe or the gasket which seals the housing to the engine. Would be well worth getting an inspection mirror (cheap from a motor factors) and having a good look around.

When I changed my radiator and thermostat I had a tiny leak coming from the underside of the pipe where it hadn't sealed correctly.

No idea really on the pop however - Good Luck :)

Toyota didn't use exactly the best hose clips IMO. They can corrode. Check that anyway. if you do remove the thermostat make sure there is nothing fouling either surface when you reconnect. For peace of mind I recommend you change the thermostat too as that might need doing. It's easy to 'pinch' the thermostat seal so make sure it is properly located (you'll know you've done it right because the thermostat housing will seal well).
I have still to do the write up on doing this but I will get around to it.

If your stuck Mahender just let us know and ask....happy to help anytime mate.

Don't forget the hose from hell too!

If you look at the front of the engine you'll see a "donut" sort of thing under the oil filter just to the right of the alternator. There are two water pipes which go to this and either coulf have burst

A genuine "pop" means that something has burst, most likely a hose. Never ever heard of a gasket going with a pop

When my head gasket went it pressurised the system enough to pop a hose.

does any of you boys /girls have a set of hoses for sale oem or samco fairly cheap please.
would it be best forme to replace anything whilst fixing this. i.e. should i geta new thermostat or can i clean it and reinsert?

last question for now . is there a step by step please. do i go from the top or from underneath? any other help /advice is unbelievably gratefully appreciated.

mahender,

There is a how to on our website, the link is in my sig below.

Go to how to and then 'repair/maintain' you will see it there.

The how to also suggests other 'things' to do at the same ime.

Happy reading.

How much water is involved here?

If it's popped a main hose I'd expect a litre every few seconds!
A small pipe burst would not fire it out at this kind of rate

Given the location of your leak:-
Main radiator hose running from the bottom left of the rad (viewed from the front of the car)
Radiator temp sensor or drain plug - both located in the vicinity of the water pipe, bottom left

The little hose to the oil cooler under the oil filter

The problem with non obvious water leaks is that they usually only show up when the engine is hot.

If you can't see anything obvious you have a couple of options

1) refill the system and start then engine
As it gets up to temperature the leak should start. The only drawback is that the engine is hot (DUH lol) and feeling around the pipework can lead to nasty burns.
(NB, before feeling round pipework switch off the engine and remove the key. You don't want any fans kicking in while you've got your arm down the front of the engine. The burning is bad enought without the mild blender effect of fans :( )

2) Some bodgefoolery to pressurise the system by other means. In the past I have done this with a simple bike pump.
Remove the main radiator cap. You'll see a hole about 3/4 inch where you fill it. Take the bike pump (or whatever other pressurizing device you have to hand but be careful if it's an airline as you don't want to blow the living bejeebus out of it with 100PSI pressure :!: ) and wrap it with tape until it forms a snug fit in the hole in the rad. Then pump up to apply pressure until the water leak starts. Hopefully the engine is still cold allowing a good groping about until you get wet
