Since fitting an AFR gauge an Wideband sensor, I keep an eye on the readings etc (new toy).
WOT I get around 10:1 to AFR.

Yesterday, I was running low on fuel near my work so just stuck a fivers worth of Texaco ordinary fuel.
On dual carriage way on the way back I got 13:1 at WOT, I did this twice then backed off.

Popping from exhaust was slightly more that usual when easing off the gas driving through town (my car has always done this.) But, on one one occasion, I got quite a loud bang from the exhaust. (almost like what a VW beetle )

Could this be down to the fuel or something else?

I've only ever got explosions from the exhaust on track. This happened when I opened the throttle on corner exit. I always assumed it was due to unburnt fuel accumulating in the exhaust which then ignited under load. As we all know the ST205 on the standard ECU overfuels dramatically. Not sure if any of this relates to your situation.

Possibly your ecu retarded timing because of the fuel. When I had my timing slightly retarded when I was setting it it used to pop very impressively a lot more often than it does now

I think I've experienced the ECU ignition timing retardation when I (briefly) ran my ST205 on 95 octane fuel years ago and it was just a fairly modest hiccup/hesitation following some pinking. The exhaust explosion was a lot more dramatic!
