Have you checked for error codes? There's a guide on the web section of the GT4DC here: http://www.gt4dc.co.uk/info/howto/ecu/e ... _codes.htm

Check all the fuses are intact and maybe alternator output with a multimeter to ensure it's working OK.

Does the car run ok otherwise ?
Is it sluggish turning over on the starter ?

First thoughts are one of the Earths dodgy, either engine to battery or battery to body - or the eyelet connection on the back of the alternator is prone to getting hot & corroded and then makes a poor connection.

Error 54 is charge cooler fluids low , so check the coolant level of the charge cooler which is on top of the engine with a radiator type cap with wires fitted on the right rear side looking from the front

Post subject:  Re: Alternator

It's quite common for the charge cooler level sensor to throw an Error 54 in cold weather as the fluid contracts. Easily fixed by topping up.

Also, you need to pull the EFI fuse to clear the fault code otherwise the light will still come on.

The code 54 has nothing to do with the alternator issue. Unless the engine light is flickering on while driving it's probably a stored code and will clear with a reset.

Next check for the alternator is to use a multimeter with the engine running and measure voltage between alternator output terminal and alternator body and then voltage across battery.

Where are you based by the way ?

Sounds like the discs might be warped? Worth checking the static runout if you have a dial gauge.

Check the clutch bite point, if it starts biting low to the carpet, that would explain it?

Might need a little adjustment?

Just had the problem with one of mine :-(
