Sounds like a plan and good advice from Martin worth following.

I followed Martin's advice when running in my new engine, the process went well and the engine now performs well. I also used the Millers running in oil and then switched to Fuchs Pro S.

Pick an mot station 10 or 20 miles away and explain the problem, asking them to keep engine off as much as possible. They should only need the engine to check emissions, power steering, brakes and moving the car about.

Pic is a bit blurred. What are we looking at here, a piece of ringland?

I've merged the two topics together to tell the whole story. :)

Are you losing any water?

The black marks look like they may be some sort of corrosion damage to the bore? Like Mike says, if you are losing any water that could be a clue. Can't see any visible cracks in the bore. Which cylinder is it?

The black marks are very likely 'dents' into the bore as the rings aren't touching at that point to keep them shiny. The cause of the dents is another question entirely - corrosion, foreign matter, bore damage prior to fitting. I doubt these would cause a massive amount of oil loss though.

The vertical markings could indicate that the bottom end gathered some dust before the head was fitted, or it could just be where coolant dropped in as the head came off and then pushed up & down on the rings.

Looking at the lower picture, there are a number of dark shadows down the bores, especially No. 4, which could indicate blow-by / non sealing rings - or they could be shadows/reflections in the photo. I did hear that CP changed piston / ring design at some point and it has been known to accidentally fit the wrong ones causing this sort of issue. It may be worth checking with Tim to see if this is possible.

Is this second picture a different bore to the one a few posts back ?

Last night Chris & I were discussing it, if this is another bore, the marks look like rust eating into the wall to me. Do you know the spec of the rings on the pistons ? If one is iron based then quite likely I'd say it's rust.

Got to say that it does look a lot like corrosion to me. Was the engine built up and then left for a period without being run? Particularly if it was stored without the head fitted somewhere that condensation might have formed in the bores perhaps?
