Sorry, how does that Toyota letter help with a no cat test?

If you can prove your car can not meet uk emissions standards you get put through on a non cat test. Jap emissions is 0.67 CO which doesn't meet uk spec.

but the tester (rightly or wrong) just typed in my chassis number and the machine said to do UK test which it failed. Is the machine buggy or wrong? Did he type in the wrong part of the chassis number?
I wrote a letter to VOSA/DVLA and never got a response on the subject.. (to$$ers)

I think that's the crux of it Rob

On some systems the machines recognise the chassis code and specify a full cat test. If that happens then convincing the tester to overrule VOSA and do a non cat test is going to require at least hobnobs and rich tea levels of persuasion

The real question is why some machines recognise JDM chassis numbers and some don't. Or maybe why some JDM chassis numbers are in the database while others aren't

And as a slightly relevant aside it's not egr that makes the difference. My UK spec car passes (with cat) but the egr system is a distant memory

What I meant about egr, was "my" point to differentiate between UK and JAP spec cars (rightly or wrongly). The tested also said that JAP emissions were tighter. I said probably not 20 years hence the lack of EGR on the jap car.

The frustrating bit is, is there are 2 codes on the chassis, one generic and one specific. If you use the generic one, then that is probably the one listed in the DB.

I asked the tester which number he used and all he said "the one on the chassis" and refused to point out which one specifically, at which point I took the keys off him and left.

I'm puzzled by your reference to two chassis codes? On JDM ST205's the number is stamped on the firewall e.g. ST20500001234 and on UK ST205's on the chassis plate e.g. JT164STL500004567 These are the numbers recognised by the Toyota EPC.

Model Code & Chassis Number I suspect.

Both can have ST205 in them on the JDM but only the model code on the UK has ST205.

Diceman hit the nail on the head. I also can to that conclusion a few posts back. Sorry about the confusion with the 2 chassis numbers, I mean model number and vin number..

my model code is E-ST205 which is not the the same as ST205 (UK) so what probably happens is the MOT guy sees ST205 from a drop down menu and selects it which is not right..

Above is an example of a JAP import ST202

and if it is not listed in the anex of this document https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/346222/emissions_17th_edition.pdf
(WHICH E-ST202 is NOT) then no cat test? (bottom of page 129)

OK so the document is only referencing the last seven digits of the Chassis/VIN/Frame number so in my example a JDM car ST20500001234 would be 0001234 and on the UK ST205 JT164STL500004567 the number would be 0004567. I can't see a scenario with an ST205 GT-Four where the tester couldn't find a number on the VOSA reference document.

Personally I have always thought that the above approach taken by many owners is clutching at straws. If it works - that's fine but if it doesn't just take your car elsewhere or fit the catalytic converter back on.

The above is largely a semantics argument in whether E-ST205 is the same as ST205 or not, in which case I would also point out that the DVSA document makes reference to 'Model Codes' - nowhere on the chassis plate does it say - Model Code - it just says Model. Picky yes - but no more or less so than whether the presence of an 'E-' is relevant or not. Also given that the chassis numbers are consecutive and the document states starting from 0000001 which includes all sixth generation GT-Fours I doubt your argument would fair well if tried legally.

Finally note that even Toyota UKs legal and compliance department have omitted the 'E-' when describing the model code of a JDM ST205.

Write to your MP if you really care.

You could maybe argue that the model code isn't an exact match, E-ST205 vs ST205 but it's a bit tenuous imo

My opinion is that all of it has to match, Model code, Engine code and VIN No

from the document.
Celica
Model Code ST205 Engine Code 3S-GTE 2.0L From VIN No (last 7 digits) 0000001

Just because the frame number starts with ST205 does not mean it fits the above because
it says "From VIN No (last 7 digits) 0000001" so ignore the ST205 at the beginning (as its not part of the 7 digits)
So, the ST205 has to come from "Model Code" which in some cases is E-ST205.

Nowhere in the vosa document does it say that the Model code is extracted from the Vin No (especially from only the last 7 digit)

Note: the Vin and model code are no where near the same in the photo below for an ST202, yet I know it an ST202 by looking at the "Model" not the vin part.
