Just a heads up about ST205 ECUs capacitors blowing / leaking.

I have come across two instances of this in the last two weeks.

One was mine and one was a mates.

Mine was C895, 10 micro farad, on the daughter board, and my mates was on the main board, 33 micro farad.

Both failed after the ECUs had been powered off for a few months, and then used again.

Both repaired for less than a quid, but a pain if you break down.

One to watch out for if you don't use your car over the winter, and disconnect the battery? Image

Hmmmm,
Thinking about it there is a well known procedure for awakening an old amplifier from a few years of slumber involving slowly bringing it upto voltage to "reform the electrolytic capacitors" otherwise they can explode.

I guess that a similar procedure should ideally be adopted for an ecu.

And for any electronic equipment.

Generally mass market domestic appliances are the worst as they tend to use the cheapest components and only just rated for the job.

If anyone needs one I rigged up a very small bench psu last night for ecu that has variable voltage from 2.5 to 12v. Could be ideal for warming up an ecu! (Built for warming up and testing ecu on the bench in the warm)
