hi a freind of mine has contacted me, because he knows i have a 205
basically hes been offered a st205 that has been off the road for 2 years as a MOT
failure, believe its the brakes that need replaceing (not sure what else)!
its also a CAT C accident damaged car (thats been fixed)
also rusted doors and rear arches

also there is trouble with the engine this is why its off the road (again not compleatly sure why)

so basically looking to find out how much something like this is worth, any ideals?
what is the actual book value on a 205?
as he was told that when the car was damaged the insurance wanted to write-off the car for the value of £1700
and this was about 2 years ago

is there a actual book value on these cars that can be looked up? parkers guide or similar?

all emotions aside, just want a real world figure has to what its worth
as going off the insurance valueation from 2 years ago, it cant be that much

Without more data it is difficult to say.

Sounds like it needs a lot of work to get it running and looking half decent. Dare I say I doubt I would be prepared to pay more than £500 for it.

For your friend it would be 'a lot' cheaper to spend more on something that is running and driving.

Going by the description of the car it's so far removed from a standard depreciated car that even if there were a 'book' value it wouldn't be relevant. Anybody buying a car like that would be taking on a project and probably require deep pockets to return it to good roadworthy condition. You need knowledge, skills and experience not to mention the time, equipment and premises to do the job properly. Whilst the mechanical work is relatively easy to cost the bodywork is another matter.

Anyway, unless your friend can tick most of these boxes it would be more sensible for him to spend a bit more on a Four which is running and has a current MoT.

It sounds like unfortunately the car would be more valuable if broken for parts. It maybe worth around £1000 then but is subject to engine condition.

As has been said it would be cheaper to buy a good one than repair this example. It is soooo easy to sped £5000 on these cars it's not funny. Good ones only seem to command £5k anyway.

The only way to keep costs down is to start buying used parts which may be no better than those removed and will your mate to be a decent mechanic to repair/replace.

I bought one with an MOT and six months Tax (when you could) for £1500.

I spent including parts and labour approximately £5k so far and still going. Obviously its reaching project and modification level now as I kept on at it and didnt loose faith. However this one sounds like an absolute mare!

If you are interested in doing a full tear down restoration and ground up rebuild, buy it for no more than £800.
If you just want a fun ST205, where body kits, coilovers and forged engines are the only things you have to think about then don't bother as it will be demoralising. From my experience the restoration route is satisfying especially if its a rolling one, but You really need to be prepared to spend 4 times what the car would be worth and it needs to be a labour of love or a voyage of discovery. Luckily there are loads of GT-Four breakers, which make spare parts a lot cheaper.

If you live in the South of England I highly recommend South Coast Workshop for all your GT4 restoration needs, as they specialise in rebuilding hard life GT-Fours.

Five years ago I was able to convince an insurance company that a very low mileage very modified JDM WRC was worth £3500

These days the book is probably worth more than the car

thanks for the replys so far, im also in agreement with whats been said
i think that another concern he has is, what the insurance would value the car at
personally i think as been said, its worth sub £1000/£800 to buy
but if he did decide to take i on as a project, with the history (CAT C) and condition
i think hed struggle to get anymore than 1k
as been mentioned the car was valued at £1700 whilst on the road tax/MOTed before the accident 2 years ago
is there no basic valuation quide for these cars?

No - not really. Mainly because they are all now approaching 20 years old, with vastly variable maintenance history and condition.

Value is dependent entirely on the condition/history/upgrades of the specific car.

The car you describe doesn't sound like it's worth £1000 to me.
