Post subject:  ST185 Speed Sensor (Parts not available)

Hi, sorry for not posting for a while, my GT4 RC has been working fine :) .

Recently my local Toyota garage changed the rubber boots on the CV joint and over tightened the wheel bearing (has anyone else suffered this? It’s the second time a Toyota garage has done this, first time they broke the drive shaft). They then had to change the wheel bearing and in the process broke the Speed sensor (Part number 89543-20020). The problem is they can’t get hold of the part anymore and I wanted to ask the collective knowledge of this forum, how to get hold of parts, when Toyota no longer has them. There seem to be more and more parts that are no longer stocked for the ST185. It occurred to me there may be another Toyota or Lexus that might have the same part under a different part number, but hunting for it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Any help tracking down a Speed sensor 89543-20020 would be much appreciated.

Thanks Louise

Have you tried TCB?

Thanks for the information Diceman.

I contacted Trevor a few days ago, still waiting for a reply. Fingers crossed.
Does anyone know if the ST205 sensor would work?

I assume the speed sensor is the ABS sensor? The reason I ask is Toyota calls it a speed sensor and Trevor at TCB calls it an ABS sensor, I wanted to be sure they are talking about the same thing.

There is a speed sensor in the gearbox so be cautious you are getting the right part.

A bit of googling confirms it as a wheel speed sensor, AKA ABS sensor as it is part of the ABS system.

This also showed up on google and may be available.

It is quite likely there is an alternative which is mechanically the same but has different wire length or plug not sure how best to find out.
Alternatively, just scour the secondhand markets, buying a whole hub if needed.

Thanks Chris, good to hear from you again.

Yes I've confirmed it is one of the ABS sensors. The garage are going to try fitting an ST205 one next week, so we'll see what happens. I did wonder if a UK one and a Jap one may have different pulse frequencies as one is MPH the other KPH. I fitted a little pulse converter behind the dash to handle the conversion for the speedo and I believe that signal then goes to the ECU which is why the speed limiter would now only kick in at around 170mph. (Not a problem). So if the sensors are different then one will be 5/8 x the frequency of the other.

Lets see what happens with the 205 sensor.

All the best Louise

The frequency is set by number of teeth on the ring that fits to the cv joint.
Let us know how you get on as it will be useful information to all gen 5 owners.

OK it's official the ST205 ABS speed sensor that attaches in the wheel arch, does not fit an ST185. It's a different diameter and the electrical connection is a different plug. I'll try Trevor again at TCB again.

Might be worth a look at 182 front as that appears to be available.

Hi just an update the parts TCB has brought into the country don't fit the GT4 RC. The plug has to be swapped which is quite easy, then the rubber boot has to be trimmed so the teeth fit on the gear. When that is done the part fits, however it doesn't work and the ABS light stays on.
It’s very frustrating, my car is off the road, as a small sensor that is essential to the braking system is no longer made. Does anyone know of any GT4’s that are being broken and have successfully recovered the nearside front ABS speed sensor?
Or has anyone else found another part that works on the ST185? (ST205 won’t fit)
The problem any ST185 owner faces is this part is mechanical and will fail at some point, they are also very prone to snapping when they are removed, for example when changing the wheel bearing. This is what happened to me, when my Toyota garage were changing the bearing. :(

At this point in time ST185 owners are running on borrowed time and I don’t know what the fix is.

Any help would be appreciated.

An update.
The Celica is back on the road and working. The parts are now available from TCB. The important thing to do is to clean out the bore of the barrel that the sensor fits into and use a little lubricant like copper ease on the sensor so it slides in and out freely. If you don't do this you risk breaking the new part (as my local garage did). You will also need to cut the plug off your old sensor and use it to replace the plug on the TCB part which is not the same. This is easy as it's only two wires. The final piece of advice is to just keep the soft rubber guard on the end of the sensor as it will wear to shape on the teeth on the drive shaft in a few seconds and give the best possible protection for the end of the sensor. If you take it off thats fine but I wanted to point out you can leave it in place even through it rubs.
All good.
