Heard a noise on the st 205 this week and decided to take a look yesterday :o :o :o
The noise was a swishing noise from under the bonnet whilst running it sounded like the belts at first but they were ok so attention was turned to the cam belt and the top cover was removed
The belt had moved to the front edge of the cam sprockets and was showing a touch of wear it the front edge of the belt
Across the top of the cam sprockets the belt had a lot of play in it it was decided to strip and replace the lot
The tensioner was good as was the top tensioner pulley but the idler pulley was shot at with about 3mm of play in it so I'm thinking this was the cause of the slack belt and it moving across the cam sprockets
Had this gone south whilst running it would have been a top end rebuild so I'm a happy bunny at the moment and need to order the belt kit I normally stick with Toyota but is it worth buying HKS or similar

It's a non interference engine so probably not quite as bad as all that, but still a pain that leaves you stranded.

The usual reason for not running central is an idler bearing at a strange angle. If a bearing had failed then this would be it.

Also check the dished washer is present between the crabk sprocket and crank pulley as this stops it coming forward. I can't see one in your picture, I presume you had removit it by then.

Hi nibbles yeah the washer was removed and it is as you say the idler bearing is running out
And everyday is a school day you have taught me today that the engine is a non interference which is correct I was always worried about belts going as for some reason I thought it was an interference engine... Even after all these years of ownership I'm still learning about it

I would stick with a genuine toyota belt if it was my car.

If you are replacing the timing belt and dodgy idler I'd recommend a new tensioner as well.

It's good practice to replace the whole shebang which is what I always do, the job although not difficult is a pain so for the extra cost it's not worth replacing individual items so it's getting new belt, bottom idler, hydraulic tensioner and tensioner pulley
From Tcb total cost £180 which is a considerable saving from Toyota of £382.... And that was supposed to be Trade.. shame on Rrg of Rochdale shocking prices
