Post subject:  ST165 Fuel pump

Hello im new on this forum. I have a ST165 that has been unused for a few years. The engine turns over fine but it wont start. The fuel pump seems to be jammed as couldnt hear anything. I connected a battery directly to the plug attached but no noise. Also i checked the power supply to the fuel pump which showed zero voltage. Im assuming the seized fuel pump may have caused a fuse or relay etc to blow.

A spark plug has been removed which was completely dry and the leads are sparking when turning engine over.

Any help advice would be appreciated on what to do next

There is a relay for the fuel pump that switches in/out a resistor and this area could be "stuck/faulty".

IIRC, the 165 is the same as the 205 and in the engine diagnostic port you can link "Fp" with "+B" with a paper clip and bypass all that lot. This will make the fuel pump run - as soon as you bridge the terminals you'll here it spin up :)

Thank you for your message
Can you explain where the relay and resistor can be found?
Is there a fuse linked to the fuel pump that could have blown?

Welcome to the club.

The 165 fuel pump on/off is controlled from the AFM - air flow switches on the pump. Like the later models, the relay is a dual coil and is also switched on by the start signal. Additionally, there is a second relay which switches a resistor in series for idle/cruising.

If the pump is seized, then it will draw a lot of current and could blow a fuse, or end up with very little voltage if fed via the resistor. Bear in mind, it should only receive power with the engine running (or AFM flap pushed open) or with the starter turning.

If you have fed 12V direct to the pump plug in the boot and no fuel coming out, then it does sound like the pump is gone.

p.s. Just looked in the 165 manual - last link. On the last page is the ECU circuit in full showing fuel pump and control circuits

The only fuse is the main EFI fuse. If this were blown I doubt you'd get ignition.
