Post subject:  Consuming oil

Hi everyone,

Recently noticed my st205 was using up a lot of oil. The car isn't used everyday and so is on the drive often enough but there appears to be no patches of oil present on the ground.

Pulled a the breather pipe of the intake today and have found oil inside the intake, followed one of the pipes back and it's got traces of oil within it. What steps should I take from here? Or what could potentially be causing it?

Thanks ImageImageImageImage

When you say a lot - how much are we talking?

I would start with a compression test which is easy enough.

How much is the car smoking and at under what conditions?

Keep the car topped up at the full on the dipstick, but within a few weeks it had dropped to being just above the Low mark.

When running the car at all conditions I have never seen it smoke, shall try the compression test though.

One of the possible causes is broken ringlands (one of the weakest links on the 205 if boost is increased above standard) - a compression test would give a good indication although I've known failed ringlands give good readings.

The oil you show is from the oil breather - the clue is in the name. It's normal to get some oil coming out, and the quantity increases as the engine wears more. If ringlands fail, you get a lot more out, normally more than is shown in the picture.

Apart from ringland failure, and assuming no leaks, the most usual cause for heavy oil use is turbo oil seals. These usually result in smoke while / after the engine is left idling for a long period, especially when cold.

Another cause I've had on my original 185 engine was stuck oil rings - no leak, no smoke, good compression, minimal 'blow' from the breather but about 1L of oil to every tankful of petrol. This is more likely with low usage coupled with infrequent oil changes and/or cheap oil.
