Hi everyone,

I will do a proper introduction with some photos shortly, although i've been on here a few years back when I had my first GT4. I'll be honest and say I previously used the OC more but something seems to have happened to that in my break away from GT4's :?

However, the DC hasn't changed a bit, still has all the cracking info on the main page and a forum with people posting! so kudos for keeping it alive :!:

So im back into a GT4 and it has 'a few' issues (oh how it brings back the memories!)

The main one is the rear of the car feels rather disconnected, its a very unnerving feeling. If you change direction even slightly the back 'catches up' a few seconds later if you see where im coming from.

Now the rear knocks under acceleration so am thinking thats the diff mount? which I have a spare ready to send off.

I have all new poly bushes for all of the rear trailing and control arms to fit.

Last thing to check i guess is the subframe bushes themselves? I know you can get bushes online but is removing the subframe in reality a home mechanics job?

If it helps i have a spare set of arms and a second hand subframe that i can fit the bushes into prior to removing my one so i could go straight back up with it. Do i need to remove the driveshafts or prop etc?

Lastly If anyone thinks im barking up the wrong tree then let me know, it has had recent tein springs fitted but the shocks and top mounts were not replaced, although I can't see this making it feel loose just saggy?

Anyway, its good to be back in a 4 and to see a community not centred around bookface!

Thanks,

Most of the joints in the rear are spherical bushes (a rose joint inside a tube that looks like a normal void bush). A common mistake is for people to fit poly bushes thinking they're an upgrade and ending up with a car that's like driving a bowl of porridge.

Knocking is most likely diff mount, but could just be play in a spherical bush

Failing either of the above, it is also possible that failed subframe bushes could be to blame for a rubbery back end.

There is a topic on here somewhere that gives part numbers for the proper spherical bushes. From memory, Toyota don't list them for celica, but they are identical to supra and are available.

Hi Nibbles,

Thanks for the reply, the bushes came with the car as part of the deal with a spare set of arms and a subframe so makes sense to use them but you saying these may cause more problems than they save?

I'll get the diff mount sent away to be polybushed or i might try and find an OE toyota one.

Would you recommend not using polybushes for the subframe too?

thanks

George

Polybush are fine as an upgrade to rubber provided you don't mind the harsher ride. This applies to the subframe bushes and maybe some of the arms, I don't remember which.

Spherical bushes have no 'give' in the direction that matters, polybushes do. This means polybushes are a downgrade.

The arrow shows the bush in the rear that shodul be swapped to polybush, the other 2 in the hub are the spherical bearings.

Thank you for the information, I think I've been given all the bushes you arrowed so the ones that go into the arms.

What kind of job is the rear subframe to do? Im guessing I will need to remove the driveshafts from the diff amongst other things but are there any big things in my way?

Or do I just do the rear arms and diff mount and see if that cures the loose rear end first?

Thanks guys

Rear subframe is just a few bolts to drop. I'm not sure whether you can do the bushes in-situ, but if you're removing all the arms anyway then it's only 4 bolts per side to take the driveshafts off the diff and another 4 to take off the propshaft.

One other tip for rear diff - make sure you can undo the fill plug BEFORE removing the drain plug. Probably doesn't apply if you're taking the diff out anyway.

only bushes on the rear that are spherical are the 2 in each rear hub. the rest are just normal rubber bushes, if your looking to replace the bushes you need to keep the 2 in each hub spherical.
