Whilst I was having my exhaust fitted at Toyauto today Ian spotted that my rear diff was leaking. He advised that the front gasket was the culprit.
Was wondering if this is an easy enough job with basic tools? Much involved?

Chers guys. :)

i know that steve gillies has done this job, i am under the impression you need a slide hammer to get the driveshafts out. you definitely need this tool for the halfshafts to the wheels.

i have a spare diff up in the shed roof but im afraid to say im not going outside to have a look right now :(

saying that (and reading a few old posts), its entirely possible the front shaft can be removed by simply unbolting the bolt...its only the halfshafts i know for 100% definite you need a slide hammer

Andy,

I found this post from a chap on gt4oc.

'I'm pretty sure you will need to buy a spacer aswell as a new nut so that you can set the correct back lash between pinion and crown wheel and preload the tapered roller bearings correctly.

i think Andycaca set his diff up correctly not so long ago i wonder if he replaced the spacer or just preloaded the bearings.

Some diffs use a crushable spacer and it has to be replaced every time the pinion nut is removed, i'm not sure on the GT4 though, it may just need the bearings preloaded'.

What are your thoughts Andy?
Thanks for your help.
Steve

i dont know tbh
in the end, i never rebuilt the one i have (hence it being in the shed roof) as a 205 diff came up pretty cheap so it made more sense to buy that.

at some point, i will take the CS diff apart and have a look, but until then im afraid i cant really help :/

Will a 205 diff fit my CS then?
They are Ltd slip diffs too IIRC.
If a decent one comes up for sale would you say it's easier just to replace the whole diff unit rather than strip and reapir the existing one?
Thanks Andy....I'm learning all the time...

Steve, UK st 185's have a Torsen rear diff also.
There are so many Myths floating around!

The diff seal that you speak of is a common issue, Would certainly be easier to change out of the car!

All diffs are interchangable.

Thanks for the advise.
Does anyone have the part number for the front seal?
I can buy the diff mount no problems so just need the above.
Then I just got to find a place that'll fit it for me. :)

Guys,
If someone volunteered to help me change the front seal on my diff (I would pay of course) then I'd do a photographic write up for it.
The mount is covered but after searching many pages I can't find much info on the seals at all. :(

Thanks

Steve

Now booked into Ian Smiths. :D I actually have the rear gasket leaking so I'm told.
Will be getting a new rear gasket and diff mount from cheap toyota parts.
The gasket I need is part:
90311 38019.
Not sure if I need any washers or studs/nuts though.

Steve G - have you got more info on 185 rear diffs? This has been a "popular" belief that the 185 has a LSD whilst the CS/RC and 205 have a Torsen unit.

Pics would be good ;)

Steve - the only sure fire way I know of is to remove the rear cover and have a look inside the diff.
