Eitther this is ticking or it's the alternator - is there anything i can do, or does it need replacing?

Sound sliek your bearing has past its best on the idler m8. IIRC Kris may be able to source replacement pulleys at a reasonable £

Rob,

Try the old DIY stethoscope to narrow down the location.

Get a length of tube and point it to suspect areas. It should narrow it down ;D

Also, try the really simple water on the belt test on the alternator. Belts can get clickey too. If a little splash while running makes the noise change there's your answer

Pretty sure Kris does idler bearings, not the whole pulley per se. Check his site and have a quick decco at the cambelt replacement page here

Rob, I had a similar noise a while back and it turned out to be a knackered bearing on the Air Con idler pulley. At first I thought I'd be up for a new compressor but Mr T sell the idler assembly separate. I think the bearing failure was my own fault as I'd overtightened the drive belt. Worth checking out anyway.

Robbie - yep can do the cambelt bearings, and also the alternator belt tensioner bearing.

Obviously the easiest is the alternator bearing, and it's also the cheapest!

no air con on this one - it's been replaced by a fensport removal kit - with the oversized pulleys

How much are the bearings mate?

Thanks for the price Kris - i think it's just the idler pulley, can you supply bearings for that?
