What I had:

Error code 51:
IDL No "IDL" or A/C signal during testing

TPS test results:

0mm VTA-E2 = 0.800k
0.5mm IDL- E2 = 0.L
0.7mm IDL-E2 = 0.L
Fully Open VTA-E2 = 4.56
n/a VC-E2 = 5.89

Heavy fuel consumption (175-200 miles to a tank at a leisurely pace)
Prior to my work this weekend the car had a split Turbo to IC hose which was leaking a little oil
Would loose power / hesitate at around 3-4k in 3rd and 4th, could get past this by gentle acceleration
The throttle cable isn’t “tight” around its housing but any play is taken up by the pedal
What I perceived a low idle, around 4-500 and cut out on rapid braking / pulling in a couple of times

What I did:

I carried out the following to give me a base line and to iron out the obvious.

Cleaned IC and rocker cover out with petrol, renewed gaskets
Dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads & plugs
Home made catch can
New Forlife Red for IC system

What I get:

Car started fine last night but died on idle
Started first twist of the key this morning and went up to 2k rpm, hunted around, went back down to around 400 and died
Started again, drove out of the village and was fine at less than 30mph at low rpm
Went to accelerate out onto a main road and as the turbo started to spool up and come in at approx 3k the car just looses power and kicks out black smoke...

Limped home to find error code 43 as well my usual 51

Error code 43:
STA No starter signal over 800 RPM starting (I'm presuming this happened due to associated problems rather than being the fault itself)

I could clearly hear the turbo spool up with the window open so checked for air leaks and found that the IC to throttle body rubber wasn’t as tight as it could be, nothing obvious other than that, although haven’t tried it since as I needed to get to work.

So, I'm guessing I'm over fuelling, possibly due to an air leak? Worried that something more serious is wrong, as to a certain extent the problem I had with the car hesitating originally is now exponentially worse.

Where should I start? Take her out to test the loose IC - throttle body section and see what happens? After that I may take off the catch can and replace the original pipe work.

Cheers,

Jamie.

[Edit]

UK ST165 in Black n Rust
Powerflow stainless system, downpipe back iirc
Dizzy, Rotor, Plugs & Leads are Toyota parts

ignore code 43, thats incidental as you say

the signs are pointing to a airleak of some kind...also, have you checked the ignition timing?

Nope, currently beyond my ken i'm afraid. Best taking it to a garage for that or should I learn sharpish?

learn sharpish. its very simple :)

1. warm up engine
2. put ecu into diagnostics mode
3. click timing gun onto battery terminals and also onto an ignition lead.
4. point gun at crank pulley and see where the timing line appears relative to the markings on the lower engine casting

I'll have to try and grab a gun and have a look - haven't got time to read now but a quick google produced this second in the list ironically:

http://www.toyotacelicaonline.com/timing.htm

Where can I get a timing gun?

Hoping it's just leak as I need the car tomorrow

Halfords or most motorfactors can supply a timing gun

Do you have a dump valve fitted?

Fixed

No smoke under boost, MUCH less hesitation and winds all the way up to 6k (didn't go over that)...

Just had a quick thrash around the tarmac single tracs and B roads near here , about 17 miles worth and other than finally realising just how bad the standard 165 brakes are it stalled once at a junction but was fine otherwise. Glad I have a set of CS brakes in need of refurb and fitting in the garage!

Idle is much better too, on start went up to 14 and down to a steady 11 then dropped down to 700 when warm.

My annoying "Rattle" behind the dash is almost certainly engine bay related and is louder and I have a harshness on the timing belt side of the engine, guessing water / oil pumps are here? - Need to look into those but think my priorities are now sorting the blasted 51 and getting shocks / brakes fitted for safety purposes.

I'm going to go and open a decent red and spend the evening with my better half with a dozy glow ;)
