I thought it can be powered up just to check that it's working, that's all I wanted to achieve.
Not sure if you need a car to do that.

well you need a 12V power supply (which I suspect you have sorted now after playing with EGT on the bench?)
My Datalogit is winging its way back home again so there is a backup plan.

Yeah I have a maplin 12v bench supply, cheap but compact and seems to do the job.
