I thought I would put this forward as an idea for a meet and see if there was interest. I think this would be really useful for alot of members, especially those who get there cars out on track - it should also be a very good learning experience and help all our understanding of how to set up suspension. It is a chance to get your car corner weighted and optimise your set up and it is also a bargain at £20 including a BBQ! This is really targeted at those that have coilover's or adjustable suspension as the stock suspension doesn't allow much adjustment.

The company I have contacted regarding this are "Track Developments" who are just off the M4 near Chippenham/Castle Combe/Hullavington. They are a dedicated suspension specialist and not just a general garage, specialising mainly in the set up of track based kit cars. They have a world of experience and should be able to teach us all a hell of a lot.

This is a hands on day where you may be doing work on yours and other's cars yourself - so bring some tools if you have some! Here is the message from the main man Dave Gallop explaining what would be involved in the day:

Quote:
Hi Edd

Thanks for getting in touch - Where did you read about our open days?

You are right. We do a few days each year for local car clubs. We put a car on to our flat patch and weigh it, and measure Ride height, Camber and Tracking for each wheel. I give guide notes to the owner and have about 5 mins to answer individual quest ions. This takes 20 - 30 min/car. I have attached a typical measuring sheet that you take with you.

The owner then takes the car out and does the adjustments with the help of others in the group.

We do 12 - 15 in a day and when each of the cars have been assessed we have the adjusted ones back for fine tuning and front tracking done by me.

We usually get some quality burgers and sausages from a farm shop and provide a BBQ to break up your day as there is a bit of waiting around. I am fairly busy so you guys do the cooking etc. During the lunch break I give a talk based on the issues arising from cars and queries in the morning. We also answer questions.

Last year we charged £20 a car and £10 for visitors who came for the BBQ and a natter. As your cars a mainly saloons DIY adjustments may be less practical than our normal Kit cars/Westfields/Cobra's so you advise me on your preferred programme.
One thing to note is No children and dogs. It is a working Farm so there is machinery in open sheds Accidents could happen to bored but inquisitive young people if they wander off exploring. The combine cutter bar for instance has 30ft of spikes at a child's eye level! (See picture)

If you would like to call in to discuss details/look around give me a ring on 07977 948883.
We are 5 miles North of M4 J 17 Chippenham/Malmesbury Postcode SN16 0JZ

Regards

Dave

To me this sounds absolutely brilliant and exceptional value for money. We should all come away with better set up suspension, and a stronger idea about how to make further improvements with saving weight in the right places or re-distributing it to the best place in the car.

So come on then - get your name down! Date to be confirmed but I'm thinking maybe somewhen in May.

To be honest even if you don't have adjustable suspension there will still be useful things you can learn and do to your car - like aiding your weight distribution or learning what suspension mods would be worth while doing in future. The main thing I hope to learn is the best ways to minimise understeer on our cars and sharpen up turn initiation.

Ultimately though the more adjustable your suspension set up the more you might benefit from the meeting. I think I'm going to try and source and fit some adjustable rear top mounts before this.

Yeah I do mate, will have a word with Corby and see what they can sort. I think I'm also going to go for some slightly stiffer rear springs at the same time as well as I think this 8kg/5kg combo is a bit to much of a difference front to rear and from what I've read slightly stiffer rear spring would help with understeer, from my maths ideally I want about 6.5kg rears if I can get them.

yea, i think 6kg would be better, Im sure i read a thread about spring rates and preload, found that a slightly stiffer rear would help. You could try adding some pre-load too, that might help. Let me know how much corby want for the top mounts will ya

I will bring my standard(ish) JDM ST205 so won't be able to do more than check the basic alignment. However, if I can extract digit this should encourage me to fit my TEIN SuperStreet/EDFC which I've had for some time.

I would of totally loved to come to this, as said above, its something a little different to the usual dyno day/pub lunch. As im doing more track days also, would be good to see what could be done to improve lap times. Theres nowhere even close to where I am up here :(

Bit of an update and some useful info below. How do people feel about the 18th May?

Quote:
Hi Ed

Sorry about the tardy reply - I wanted to sort out a few calenders before settling on a date.
We have a regular BKCC open day and good presence on their site.

It may be a good idea to come in one day for a chat and have a look round. I could talk through some stuff on your car and confirm some details for an open day. I often work till 7 on a week day evening (when the weather warms up a bit!). otherwise I am in most Saturdays for callers and car collections etc. Sundays not available except in exceptionable circumstances

Regarding the GT4's tendency to understeer , I have seen some huge understeering events at trackdays featuring saloon cars.
My usual reaction would be to get an instructor on board and improve the drivers technique first. The instructor would also recommend which route to go with car mods on the car in use.
All the easy weight saving methods remove weight from the rear of the car. This increases the proportion of front Bias! The removal of the dash and 50K of electricals and heater, replace boot/doors with lighter versions makes the car unusable for a day to day run about.....

Almost all the considerations and calculations treat the car as a whole and F to R proportions of spring/ARB/damper/corner weight and geometry settings are more important than the absolute values.

The obvious fixes are to Lower the car to get the Cof G lower (but this lowers the roll centre increasing the roll moment!), increase the camber to get the front tyres to bite more and stiffen the A/R Bars and springs. Again all of this makes the car more unpleasant in normal use.

I have 2 appointment over the weekend you suggest The previous Sat May 18th could be a possibility or any of the first 4 Sat's in June.

Although I have a 4 post lift it is too inaccessible on an open day
.I have a trolley jack and 2/3 sets of stands and if you bring your basic toolkits I will chip in with anything else needed. As for numbers perhaps 8 to 10 could work.

regards

Dave

Could work out well as its the week after Japfest - so if you guys are going you can test your car out on track to look for weeknesses, then while its still fresh in your mind come to this meet to make the necessary changes :D

Come on holiday down South then! Might be able to coincide it with a track day somewhere :)
