Morning Folks,

Last year we decided as a club to skip Japfest and do something else as a replacement for it.

This year I propose that we do something similar. Japfest itself is on the 10th May 2014 at Castle Combe, I propose we stay away from this date as people may want to attend the event with another club / on their own.

So I'm suggesting we go for the 3rd/4th May or the 17th / 18th May.

Last year the event went something like:

Saturday afternoon

Meet at a picturesque spot for coffee and cake - then a spirited drive to somewhere else nice before then heading to a campsite for food, campfire, ale, merriment and sleep.

Sunday

Leisurely breakfast at the campsite then we headed to a car museum followed by a mid afternoon sunday lunch and then head home.

I think those that came really enjoyed it, the campsite was brilliant I thought.

So this year I think we should do something similar but i'd like to open it up to suggestions and a show of interest. The costings last year were minimal, I think the campsite was £6 per person or thereabouts, apart from that it was fuel/food and museum entry.

So what I need from people is:

1) Interest and preferred date
2) Suggestions for location and activities

Cheers :)

I'd be interested, later in the month I think due to lack of snow so far, I'm guessing that's still to come after all the water goes !

I meant to ask at the curry meet what plans were for this year.

Last year was really enjoyable and I'm definately in for this year. i would propose the same campsite as the whole area is great (Cheddar Gorge) unless there are better suggestions or others want a change.

Either date is free for me at the moment.

Japfest was also a whole lot better last year, both content and organisation. If this club isn't going, I'll probably go with the MR2 club or maybe ccuk.

Just noticed CCUK is doing a camping weekend in Northampton on the 2-5 May so the earlier date would clash if anyone is thinking of doing both.

I'd be happy to do the exact same again, it was great last year. More wood required though

If you fancy the same area, there are also caving things, cheddar caves which I've never been in but.i think are only s.small or I'd love an excuse to go round wookey hole again.

OK so it sounds like last years event went don fairly well, so I propose that we repeat maybe visiting the caves this time and allowing a bit more time. The caves are quite interesting, I've been there many times.

You can also do a potholing thing in the big cave where you go further past the area where the public are allowed you have to get dressed up in boilersuit, harness, hard hat, miners light etc! I remember from when I was 15 though that some of the bits were a bit tight, perhaps I have eaten a few too many pies since then.

I suggest the weekend of the 17th / 18th May as the weather hopefully stands a chance of being a bit better.

A rough plan would be to meet on Saturday Lunchtime at Chew Valley Lake which is a great spot and has a nice cafe. Grab a spot of lunch or bring a picnic. Hopefully Alex and Lewis will join us and bring the hamper!

Then go for a drive around the area which has some brilliant roads to end up in Cheddar. Visit the caves, sweet shop and ale/cider shop before heading to the supermarket to buy supplies for the evening and breakfast.

We can then head to the campsite to pitch our tents (there are hotels nearby as well), for dinner I suggest we pop to a local pub fairly early then returning to the campsite for beers / snacks round a campfire. The campsite is great, the location is really picturesque.

On Sunday we can do bacon rolls for breakfast and then I was thinking of making a visit to the Fleet Air Arm Museum at RNAS Yeovilton which is fairly close by. Probably then head to a pub for a late lunch and then head home when we are bored.

Whose in?

That's great. I made a presumptive call and booked for those likely to come along :)
