It's all about experimenting with settings and lighting. Just try different things and see what you get especially with the light painting. You will develop a "feel" for how long to light and where to point it etc. Long exposures tend to bring up any ambient light as in the bottom right corner of the above. That's at 30 sec, it just gets worse the longer the shutter is opon and although it looks pleasing in the above, it might not always be desireable especially when more pronounced. I'm no expert so don't take anything I say as gospel, just try stuff!

I think it's mostly down to time and a realisation that cameras detach you from what you are actually seeing. I'm probably a weirdo as I've switched from SLR rigs to (pretty crappy) cameraphones :oops:

I think the magic sort of died when I switched to digital bodies and it all got a bit easy
