just bought a ST205 GT-4 WRC edition with basic mods and am looking into oil now as it needs service.

so specs:

1998cc rev3 3S-GTE jap import (stock 255hp)
124 000km so about 75 000miles on clock

japspeed full 3" exhaust
japspeed 3" decat downpipe
apexi avc-r boostcontroller @ 1.1bar
apexi open intake + custom airbox

use: hard street use (once warmed up to temp kind of rally style, i only drive on small tarmac roads between the fields, speeds up to 200km/h approx, bust mostly hard accelerating) + occasional trackdays

what engine, gearbox and diff oil should i use?

What brands can you get?

For the engine something like the ester based Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-1145-silkol ... gines.aspx

the silkolene syn5 75w-90 will do gearbox, diff and transfer http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-850-silkole ... r-oil.aspx

Cheers

They do some good oils too, not heard of Marly before.

Cheers

Have to agree with the pros here - the Silkolene is a really good oil.
I use the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 for my engine and Silkolene syn5 75w-90 for my close-ratio gearbox.
My car is used for daily driving, the Toyota Sprint Series Championship and the occasional track day.

Thanks for that. It's amazing the number of people who think some guy they once spoke to in the pub is the one who knows about oil

One thing I have noted, is that you are recommending a synthetic oil for the gearbox? Using synthetic oil with the GT4's gearbox has been found to cause synchro issues, the toyota OEM oil is the best to use for the gearbox.

Kind regards,

J

Hi

I think I've gone over this somewhere on here before, synthetic oils do not cause issues with the synchros. Using the wrong one might, but if you use the correct oil it's fine. When this was mentioned to me before, apparently there was a build up of yellow stuff around the synchros, which could well be sulphur based. That is likely to come from the additives in the oil rather than the oil itself and the additive package is not related to whether the oil is synthetic or mineral. Oils from reputable companies do not have excessive sulphur levels, so there should not be that issue.

Also, what sort of synthetic oils are you referring to? Have a look at this link as it explains oil basestocks.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/pdfs/tech-art ... ptions.pdf

As you can see from that, group 3 synthetics are mineral based. Do they cause the issues with the synchros?

Cheers

Tim
