short article on one of the last 185's built for ralling by TTE on speedhunters, couple of nice pics but not much...

http://speedhunters.com/archive/2012/02 ... ictor.aspx

I like the fact that its still exactly as it came back from rally safari but can't they find somewhere better to display it? Would've thought it would be in a museum but sounds like its in a lobby type area?

Yes, this is exactly winning car of Safari rally in 1995 and I drove in Safari road in Kenya.

We did testing both ST205 and ST185 in Kenya beginning of 1995,

however still ST 185 had a lot of advantage for durability and maintainability,

that's why we were decided on driving ST185 in Safari Rally and

this is last rally for our factory ST185 entry for WRC.

You can feel and smell our sweating from cockpit.

You can see dust and dents after running 3000km rough savannah road in Kenya.

We had two times accident during the rally,

one is hit to Mtatu(local carryall) and had roll over!!

But fortunately we still possible to carry on competition.

So this is reason why Rally car had a lot of dents.

This is the same car as displayed at the 2007 Goodwood Festival of Speed. I remember thinking at the time that the Four looked in a pretty bad state. It wasn't just the Safari Rally accident damage but the rust indicated it hadn't been looked after very well. Very sad for such a historic car :-( The Speedhunters write-up mentions it is on display semi-exposed to the elements. I appreciate that Toyota may want to preserve the 1995 Safari winner in original condition as it finished the rally but would like to see it kept under cover to prevent it deteriorating.
