Saw this on ebay last week and thought it was worth looking at, went up to Hartlepool a couple of times before handing over the cash

It doesnt start but has fired and turned over, the battery is duff so having to use a jump start pack at the minute.

It will keep me busy this winter :)

Its not showing any fault codes in fact the engine management light doesnt come on at all
Turning the key just results in a rapid clicking which I cant tell if it a relay opening and closing or the starter motor, any thoughts

Low battery causing the starter motor to not engage would be my first guess, or bad connection.?

Rapid clicking = duff battery. A jump starter pack / jump leads won't provide enough current if the battery has gone open circuit.

No engine light = bulb removed, ECU or EFI fuse gone or ECU faulty / removed.

So, I have checked the distributor cap, rotor arm, plugs and leads and put a new battery on.
It fires and splutters and on 2 occasions has started for a few seconds before stalling due to low revs, I tightened up the throttle cable a little to lift the starting rpm and the car ran for a minute before cutting out as I slackened off the cable. I haven't been able to start it again although it does turn over and fire
Thoughts?
Cheers

I would say the next step is to replace the engine light and check error codes.

Being a 185, I'd most suspect a hole / leak in the air plumbing, quite likely in the corrugated pipe from AFM to turbo.

This may sound really daft!
The turbo / air intake pipe as mentioned above is knackered and is cracked / holed. Would that result in the inability to idle due to the AFM not picking up any air being drawn in?

Indeed it would.

Tank (/gaffer/duct) tape is a usable temporary 'get you home' bodge to prove a point.

Well there is fuel getting through, I took the fuel supply pipe off the top of the fuel filter and it pumped fuel out when I turned it over
