Just put my old turbo housing through the parts washer after stripping it down, and found cracks internally.

See pics

Is this common, or a cause of potential failure?

I've heard reports of the TTE inconel turbine housing failing in spectacular (and expensive) fashion. I guess if your turbo has seen high boost and/or experienced some sort of thermal shock then it could result in cracking?

As a matter of interest, what was your intention with this turbo by stripping it? They're not exactly the sort of component you can rebuild yourself!

Just planning to get it rebuilt so thought I'd strip it down and clean the casting.

There is about 8 cracks in total, and if a piece comes off all bets are off.

Sounds like it's only fit for the skip Phil. I think JP has a secret stash of turbos if you need a rebuild candidate
