hi got a split in my two front CV boots, what's the best/cheapest route to go?

its up for a MOT shortly, so ideally a quick fix replacement for now, until budget
allows for a more permanent fix

can these be replaced with a repair type boot like the outer ones?
also how hard of a job is it? im assuming not a diy fit if more is needed

as mentioned, just need this done to get through the MOT until money allows
a better option

I thought generally these repair boots were fairly universal in their application - just buy them in the correct size.

I would guess the view from most on here would be do it once do it right rather than wasting money on a quick fix that may fail quickly and then have to do the job properly anyway.

The stretch universal ones still require driveshaft removal, the only thing you save is the need to pull a cc joint apart which can be easy or a pain depending on luck.

There is a version which wraps round and sticks together which may last long enough for the mot, after that you will be filling the joint with dirt leading to rapid wear and then replacement of the whole driveshaft - inner joints are not replaceable, outer ones are.

thanks for the replys, i hope i made it clear in my post that this was only a quick
option for passing the MOT and not a long term solution

its going to be MOTed in the next week or so, so im not in a position to afford
a mechanic to disassemble the suspension to replace the boots

so was hoping that i could get the split boot kit, to get the car MOTed,
and get the job done right at a slightly later date
(i wouldn't leave the repair boots on for too long, i think too much of my car)

so if i can do this myself, it would be ideal
with some help on what size kit/boot id need and some pointers

Think I wrote an article on how to change the outer boot, which may prove useful?

If this is on the passenger side then I strongly recommend you change the gearbox oil seal at the same time... and its a bugger to do!

One of those stretchy crappy boots or a split gluey thing would bodge it for a short time...

as i didn't get a chance to MOT the car, so looks like im going to get the mechanic to do the job of
replacing the CV boots

so it would be handy for further info the above

Hi Ray,

Following removal of the driveshaft, it is very common for the gearbox oil seal to start either weeping or pour out, lol.

Recommend;
1. Draining the gearbox oil, (straightforward job)
2. Remove the the drive shaft, (tap it out using a piece of wood as a drift)
3. Replace the gearbox oil seal - a sod to do! (Place in freezer overnight to shrink it). Get a genuine Toyota part...
4. Then refit the driveshaft and top up the gearbox oil...

NB - seal replacement only applicable to passenger side...
