Hi guys, loosing a 'substantial amount' .of brake fluid. From full, down to warning light on in 4 weeks/maybe 200 miles.
Yes I have spotted where it goes......from back of engine onto the exhaust, then on to drive shaft, which sprayes it all over and also a little puddle on ground below on drivers side rear of engine...
I thought I had an engine oil leak until the brake fluid 'low level' light came on, then I realised what it must be!!!
Blast these cars!
What you reckon? Master cylinder is not easy to inspect and the bottom is not really visible? Might it be running into servo and dripping out of there? I read there are two grommets which may perish?
What sort of job is it to check these?
Nowt but bother but I still love it :(
Any advise gratefully accepted.
Cheers. Jeff

Sounds like a problem around the master cylinder area... can you see where it is leaking from?

Most likely master cylinder, but a possibility it could be a corroded brake line the MOT missed / couldn't see.
In the absence of being able to see exactly where the leak is coming from, I would get a new master cylinder anyway and have a look at the pipework while the old one is off and you can see better.

Cheers guys. Cannot see anything from below. Nor from the top! Looks like I will have to remove the reservoir and the master cylinder then! Damn it :(

The 205 has a brake proportioning valve central on the firewall which could also be a possibility if the 185 has a similar setup

Does the brake pedal creep at all when pressed?

Also bear in mind the clutch uses brake fluid so be sure to check both cylinders

Thanks.
The brake pedal is solid when depressed, no creep at all. Very weird!

Is the CS (ABS) master cylinder the same as the import (generally non ABS) for the 185?
I can get a used one for £40 from ebay and do a refurb???
Chilterns shows it different :(. One has piston stopper bolt in bottom, one on side :(

On ABS cars, the proportioning valve is on the ABS pump, the one on the bulkhead is a blank. Either way, they are solid externally so unlikely to leak to outside.
The only seal to outside air on the master cylinder (other than resevoir) is the one on the input rod. This isn't pressurised so won't cause creepage on the pedal, just fluid loss.

I wouldn't expect a significant difference between ABS and non-ABS, but can't speak from a position of knowledge. My first port of call would be TCB to see if they do a refurbed one.

That's great mate, thanks. TCB do an £80 exchange cylinder and there is no mention of an option.
It is just that the Chilton manual has details of two cylinders showing w/o abs and w/ abs for the 90-93 celica.
Is it possible for the grommets to leak? there is only one little bolt holding the reservoir to the cylinder???
You gotta love these cars :(

I've contacted both sellers on ebay ref the master cylinder and servo re 'is it abs' and had no replies.!
If there is no difference should I just get the cheaper one?
I dunno what to do!
