Just wandering about peoples experiences with boost controllers, manual and electronic, and if there's much benefit in fitting one.
Would be interesting to know what sort of power can be expected on an otherwise standard engine and any downsides such as reliability issues, overheating and fuel consumption.
I understand that 1 bar is the safe limit but is there a direct correlation between boost and power, e.g 0.8 bar =X, 1 bar =Y.
Also what are the best brands to use and any others that should be avoided?

The main downside on a 185 is a much greater probability of blowing a standard paper headgasket.

Otherwise, electronic boost controllers offer more flexibility but are much more expensive and more complex to fit & configure.

Thanks for your input Chris.
I'm not looking for massive power and wasn't thinking of any more than 1 bar boost to maintain reliability.
I wouldn't want to alter boost levels once set so was thinking the manual type might be simpler but would like to hear from owners who've fitted either type. I understand there's a built in fuel cut to protect against high boost levels, does this still work with a boost controller and if so at what boost.
Would be nice to hear others experiences.

Boost cut comes from the manifold pressure sensor so will still work with a boos controller - assuming it's plumbed in. I have known the pip disconnected as a boost cut defender. This does lead to detonation and possible engine damage as the ignition curve uses this as load axis (equivalent of vaccum advance)
