Our esteemed Vice Chairmain has just drawn my attention to this electroluminescent instrument panel kit. I've been looking for something like this for ages

Image

Pictured is the JDM kit but they also do a UK/Euro kit

I like the idea of it and have been thinking about something like this for a while - that one just looks a bit 'fussy' for me.

I'd like something a bit simpler, but I look forward to seeing it in the flesh. :)

I have this kit already (bought it secondhand) but haven't fitted it because I don't have any instructions.
So when yours comes through Don...can I borrow the instructions please.

Bit too busy for my liking when lit up, but the basics are fine. Hope it works out :o

Received my EL kit very promptly from supplier Visual-Performance. I used their ebay shop rather than their web site although I noticed that they don't list the UK spec kit on ebay, only on their own web site. Not a problem for me as Snowy is JDM :D

Image

There is a slight difference between the UK and JDM gauges. For those that thought the JDM display was too 'busy perhaps the UK would appeal more

Updated with photos from Muddy Waters ST205 EL instrument illumination installation we did yesterday

The wiring on the dimmer controller needed to be extended in order to take the power from centre console lighter socket

Work in progress!

The dimmer screen colour controller mounted on the lower left of the instrument binnacle

View of the finished installation at night. The dimmer switch was set to maximum brightness for the photos. The dimmer was found to be very effective at reducing the brightness. The difference between the blue and green settings was found to be minimal. The green is more of a kingfisher blue colour.

I like the white look.

For me the night look would require sunglasses

The antilag seems to work well in the last two photos :!: Something not quite right there I suspect

Very weird, the needle is on the bottom stop with the power off. It was a secondhand dash so maybe its not healthy?

Ok.
Well the instructions that come with the gauges are pretty good with regards to fitting them to the instrument panel.
One thing I would say is that you need double-side tape to secure them so as to ensure there are no high spots that cause the needles to stick.
(My rev counter needle was sticking which turned out to be a high spot to the rear of the needle which was causing it to stick - a tiny strip of double-sided tape and problem solved).

As far as wiring them in was concerned...
The online EWD diagrams and EWD manuals (courtesy of Don) did not make alot of sense and didn't appear to replicate the block connectors I had behind my instrument panel.
So, in the end, decided to extend the power and earth leads on the gauge kit and tap into the cigarettte lighter illumination wires.
One thing to make sure when doing this is ensure the extended cables a long enough so that when you pull the instrument panel out you can get to and disconnect the connectors at the rear of the instrument panel.

The only disappointing thing, as Don mentioned

is the colour difference.

Yer I actually like that too - pity I can't get all the other lights to be white.
Umm, may have a go.
Although I am looking into a single colour illumination theme for the interior.

As far as the gauges are concerned, the dimmer switch does work really well.
As far as the "idiot" gauges are concerned they are actually lower enough for me (being a lanky g*t) so as not to be distracting.

I have 2 instrument panels with white face gauges - the 1st instrument panel I removed the black face dials and needles and replaced them with the white face dials. DO NOT DO THIS. The needles do not reset them selves and give false readings.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased with the way things turned out.
