What is the difference if any between the st185 and st205 gearbox and transfer box.

Mine is a little crunchy on second and has a little whine and leak, i also spotted a dodgy looking half screwed in bolt when i was looking at it some time ago.

i might have an st205 gearbox/transfer box combo thats going cheap as it needs a rebuild.

are ratios same etc

cheers

Not sure of the difference in internals/ratios etc (if any) but...
they are definitely interchanglable.
Obviously the 205 box has been built to cope with greater bhp/torque of the 205 (over the 185).
I'm using a recon 205 gearbox for my 185 track car build
(albeit with a C-ONE gear set lurking inside).

I think there's a difference in the speed sensor but not 100% sure what. Otherwise interchangeable.

205 has better syncromesh.
Ratios are slightly different. Somewhere there's a post listing the variants and their ratios.
The 185 has the mode selection lever, 205 doesn't.

The ST185 got a mechanic speedo drive, the ST205 got a electric one but they are interchangeable as they are only pluged into the gear box housing.

My 185 has an electric speedo drive, as have all the others I've worked on. I have heard of some having mechanical drives though.

every ST182/5 LHD have a mecanical speedo drive, dash and GB are on the same side ;)

every ST 182/5 RHD have an electric speedo drive for the same reason : a mechanical cable won't turn that easy on the other side
