Good & bad news.

Ecu is still displaying the symptoms. No engine light, intrercooler running, no start. As least we know It's ecu at fault.

At least that's a step forward. Can the ECU be inspected further?

Thats a bummer :( What causes the components on the board to fail? Is it just old age or can moisture, condensation etc. result in corrosion where the components are soldered to the PCB?

Is the ECU different on a CS to a standard 185?

Just thinking TCB may be able to help?

Given the 20 year lifespan it's sort of end of life but since Chris has seen more than 1 failure of the same component it does seem that that life is shortened.
It's been a while since I looked at MTBF figures but dim memory suggests about a million hours for a typical electrolytic and it's unlikely to be close to that. IIRC Jeff's car has done best part of 200k miles which suggests less than 20k hours. So it is an early failure
Probably a sign that it's being used in the upper ranges of operating conditions which is having an adverse effect on rated life. Or possibly it's a sign of a downstream problem - sticky idle valve causing larger than normal voltage spikes on the line for eg
Additional diagnosis of Jeffs might reveal more info

Cs is different to normal 185, mapping completely different apart from anything else as it has bigger turbo and bigger AFM.

An RC one can be persuaded to fit, but I gather idle control works the other way round.

Since I think it's decoupling on the idle solenoids, I would guess ripple current is above what a 10uF would normally be expected to handle.
I would hazzard a guess that the capacitor failure has put a load of electrical noise on the supply to the rest of the circuitry and has zapped a semiconductor. I'm not optimistic but I will continue trying to diagnose.

Meanwhile, worth asking around for a spare CS ecu, or possibly an RC.

AFAIK the CS ECU is different, not least due to the driver for the chargecooler.

EEEEeeeek! thanks and all that but all I can find is http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350699386519? ... 1438.l2649
£500+
Is it sure the RC is the same as CS?
Maybe time to go aftermarket or whatever???
Anyone breaking a CS?
I'll ask around :(

I know its not original but if an RC ECU needs re-jigging and CS ECU is megabucks then why not consider a ST205 ECU conversion? It may not end up being that much cheaper than a budget aftermarket if you pay someone else to do it though.

We have a few spare ST205 ECU's in the DC collective but I have idea if its feasible to use them on an ST185CS?

It is a bit of a mission when you get into the detail but parts are readily available.

You need 540cc injectors (St205 cams IMHO for sensible fuelling), Map sensor, IAT sensor and some wiring joggery pokery.
